Description

The 2023 Château Montrose Saint-Estèphe Grand Cru Classé is a benchmark Bordeaux from one of the most respected estates on the Left Bank. Known for its depth, precision, and remarkable ageing potential, Montrose consistently delivers a powerful yet refined expression of Saint-Estèphe.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep, concentrated ruby color. The nose is expected to open with layers of blackcurrant, blackberry, graphite, cedar, and subtle floral and smoky notes, reflecting both the estate’s classic style and the character of the vintage. On the palate, Montrose is usually structured and densely textured, with firm yet polished tannins, fresh acidity, and a long, savoury finish. The 2023 vintage should offer a balance of ripe dark fruit, mineral tension, and precision, with the capacity to develop beautifully over decades.

Production
Château Montrose lies on the gravelly, clay-rich soils of Saint-Estèphe, a terroir that gives the wines their signature power, freshness, and structure. The estate’s vineyards are carefully managed and harvested with precision, with fruit typically selected parcel by parcel to preserve purity and detail. Vinification is carried out with a focus on extraction control and balance, followed by élevage in oak to build complexity without overwhelming the wine’s natural finesse.

Food & Serving
This is an ideal partner for rich dishes such as roasted lamb, beef Wellington, ribeye steak, duck breast, or game with earthy sauces. It also works well with aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for several hours if opening young to allow the wine to fully unfold.

Producer
Château Montrose is one of the great names of Saint-Estèphe and has long been recognised as a reference point for serious Bordeaux collectors. Classified as a Grand Cru Classé in 1855, the estate is celebrated for producing wines of exceptional longevity and consistency. Its reputation has been built on meticulous vineyard work, cellar precision, and a style that combines power with remarkable elegance.
