Description

Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux 2023 is the emblematic second wine of one of Bordeaux’s most revered estates, capturing the elegance and finesse that have made Château Margaux a benchmark for Margaux wines. In 2023, the estate delivers a wine that is both vibrant and refined, offering a glimpse into the grand vin’s character at a more approachable level. This cuvée stands out for its precision, purity of fruit, and beautifully sculpted tannins, all rooted in the historic terroir of one of the Médoc’s great classified growths.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Pavillon Rouge presents a deep, vivid ruby colour with purple highlights, reflecting its youth and concentration. The nose is expressive and pure, with layers of ripe blackcurrant, blackberry and red cherry intertwined with notes of violet, graphite, cedar, and subtle spice. Hints of floral perfume and a touch of fresh tobacco and cocoa emerge with aeration, adding complexity and Margaux’s signature aromatic lift. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a precise, linear core of fresh dark and red fruits framed by fine-grained, silky tannins. There is a lovely tension between ripe fruit, lively acidity, and well-judged oak, giving the wine both immediacy and structure for aging. Flavours of cassis, black cherry, plum and wild berries are supported by nuances of pencil shavings, sandalwood and savoury herbs. The finish is long, elegant and mineral, leaving a lingering impression of freshness and finesse rather than power. While already charming in its youth, this 2023 Pavillon Rouge has the balance and structure to evolve gracefully for 10–15+ years under good cellar conditions.

Production
Château Margaux sits on some of the most privileged terroir in the Médoc, with deep gravel soils over limestone and clay that provide superb drainage and naturally limit yields, concentrating flavour and finesse in the grapes. The 2023 Pavillon Rouge is typically based on Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a touch of Petit Verdot, all sourced from parcels that mirror the character of the grand vin but are selected for slightly earlier approachability. Harvesting is done by hand, parcel by parcel, with rigorous sorting in the vineyard and at the cellar to ensure only pristine fruit is used. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats, allowing for gentle extraction and precise fermentation management. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (a portion new, alongside one-year-old barrels from the grand vin) to integrate tannins, refine texture and add subtle complexity without overshadowing the clarity of fruit or the expression of the Margaux terroir.

Food & Serving
The 2023 Pavillon Rouge is a versatile partner at the table, ideally suited to classic dishes such as roast lamb, grilled ribeye, veal chops, or duck breast, as well as more refined pairings like beef tenderloin with truffle jus or herb-crusted rack of lamb. It also works beautifully with game birds, mushroom-based dishes, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or matured Gruyère. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours will help open the bouquet and soften the tannins; as the wine gains bottle age, a shorter decant of around 30–45 minutes is often sufficient to allow its aromatics and texture to fully unfold.

Producer
Château Margaux is one of Bordeaux’s most illustrious estates and a Premier Grand Cru Classé of the 1855 Classification, with a winemaking heritage that stretches back several centuries. Situated in the heart of the Margaux appellation on the Left Bank of the Gironde, the château is renowned for producing wines that epitomize elegance, aromatic complexity and longevity. Pavillon Rouge, the estate’s second wine, has its origins in the 19th century but was firmly established in its modern form in the late 20th century, benefitting from the same meticulous vineyard management and cellar expertise as the grand vin. Under the stewardship of the Mentzelopoulos family, Château Margaux has continued to invest in innovation and vineyard precision, cementing its status as a reference point for the region and for classically styled, refined Médoc wines.
