Description
Château Léoville Las Cases is one of the great names of Saint-Julien, renowned for its extraordinary precision, structure, and longevity. As a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé from the historic 1855 classification, it stands among Bordeaux’s most revered estates, with vineyards bordering Château Latour and a style that has long appealed to collectors and connoisseurs alike.
Tasting Notes
The 2023 vintage shows a deep, polished color and an aromatic profile layered with blackcurrant, dark cherry, blackberry, cedar, graphite, tobacco, and subtle spice. On the palate, it is concentrated and linear, with finely grained tannins, lively freshness, and a remarkable sense of poise and definition.
The finish is long, mineral, and complex, reflecting the Cabernet-driven backbone that gives the wine its depth and authority. While already impressive in its youth, this is a wine built for long ageing and should develop beautifully over decades, gaining further nuance and secondary complexity.
Production
The estate’s vineyards in Saint-Julien sit on deep gravel soils with a clay-rich subsoil, an ideal terroir for producing structured, ageworthy Bordeaux. Grapes are hand-harvested with strict selection, then vinified parcel by parcel in temperature-controlled wooden and stainless-steel tanks before maturation for 18–20 months in French oak barrels, including a significant proportion of new oak.
Food & Serving
This wine is an excellent match for beef, lamb, venison, and rich, slow-cooked dishes, as well as mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for several hours if drinking young to allow the wine to open fully and reveal its aromatics and texture.
Producer
Château Léoville Las Cases is one of the historic estates of Bordeaux’s Left Bank and has earned a reputation as one of the most consistent and serious producers in Saint-Julien. Known for its rigorous vineyard work and classically styled wines, the château is widely admired for producing wines of remarkable structure, elegance, and ageing potential, vintage after vintage.
