Description
The 2023 Château Léoville Las Cases is one of the most sought-after wines from Saint-Julien, celebrated for its precision, depth, and remarkable longevity. Often regarded as the most “First Growth-like” of the Second Growths, it combines aristocratic structure with exceptional finesse, making it a benchmark bottle from Bordeaux.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep ruby-to-garnet color, signaling both concentration and freshness. The nose is usually layered and complex, offering dark cassis, blackberry, graphite, cedar, violets, tobacco, and a mineral edge that reflects the estate’s Left Bank identity.
On the palate, this wine is known for its firm yet polished tannins, vibrant acidity, and tightly coiled core of black fruit, spice, and savory nuance. It generally finishes long, precise, and structured, with excellent aging potential—this is a wine that can evolve beautifully for decades in a strong cellar.
Production
Château Léoville Las Cases sits in the northern part of Saint-Julien, bordering Pauillac, on deeply gravelly soils with clay and sand subsoils that are ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate is known for meticulous vineyard management and careful hand harvesting, with parcel selection playing an important role in preserving purity and detail. Vinification is traditionally rigorous and precise, with careful extraction and élevage in French oak to build structure, complexity, and age-worthy balance.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with classic dishes such as grilled ribeye, lamb with herbs, duck breast, venison, and slow-braised beef. It also works well with truffle dishes and mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–3 hours if drinking young to allow the aromatics and structure to open gradually.
Producer
Château Léoville Las Cases is one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious historic estates, with roots dating back to the 17th century and a long-standing reputation for producing wines of exceptional seriousness and longevity. Classified as a Second Growth in 1855, it is widely admired for the consistency and class of its wines, and for its exceptional terroir in one of the Médoc’s finest locations. Over the years, it has earned a reputation among collectors as one of the most reliable and cellar-worthy producers in all of Bordeaux.
