Description

La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion 2023 is the second wine of the illustrious Château La Mission Haut-Brion, crafted with the same care and precision as the grand vin yet offering earlier approachability. This is a refined, classically structured red Bordeaux that captures the spirit of Pessac-Léognan in a slightly more generous, fruit-forward style. Named in reference to the historic chapel on the estate, it stands as a gateway into the world of one of Bordeaux’s most storied properties.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion shows a deep, vibrant ruby to garnet hue with a youthful purple rim, reflecting its energy and concentration. The nose is expressive and layered, with aromas of ripe blackcurrants, crushed raspberries and black cherries interwoven with graphite, tobacco leaf, cedar, and a hint of warm earth and violet. On the palate, this wine is medium to full-bodied with a fine, elongated structure and a core of precise, pure fruit. Juicy cassis, dark plum and red berry tones are framed by refined tannins and fresh, mineral-driven acidity typical of Pessac-Léognan’s gravel soils. Subtle notes of cigar box, cocoa and a faint smokiness emerge on the finish, suggesting its close kinship with the grand vin. While crafted to be approachable in its youth, the 2023 vintage has the balance and structure to evolve gracefully over 8–15 years, gaining complexity and softness with time in bottle.

Production
La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion is sourced from the gravel-rich terroir of Pessac-Léognan, just south of the city of Bordeaux, where deep layers of gravel, sand and clay promote excellent drainage and impart the estate’s signature mineral, smoky nuance. The blend typically leans on Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with supporting roles from Cabernet Franc and occasionally Petit Verdot, though proportions vary by vintage. Grapes are harvested plot by plot, often by hand, at optimal ripeness, then sorted meticulously to select only the best berries. Vinification is carried out in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to preserve finesse over power. The wine is then matured in French oak barrels (a proportion of which are new), allowing it to gain complexity, polish its tannins and integrate subtle spice notes without overwhelming the purity of the fruit.

Food & Serving
This 2023 La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion pairs beautifully with refined yet comforting dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, duck breast, beef tenderloin, veal chops, or a classic roast chicken with root vegetables. It also complements earthy dishes like mushroom risotto, truffled pasta and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and texture. In its youth, a gentle decant of 45–60 minutes is recommended to open the bouquet and soften the tannins; as it gains bottle age, a shorter decant will generally suffice, primarily to remove any sediment.

Producer
Château La Mission Haut-Brion is one of Bordeaux’s most revered estates, situated in the Pessac-Léognan appellation and long considered a spiritual and stylistic counterpart to its neighbor, Château Haut-Brion. With origins dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries, the property was historically tended by religious orders whose chapel still stands as a symbol of the estate—hence the name “La Mission.” Over time, the château has built a reputation for producing some of the most profound and age-worthy wines in Graves, renowned for their depth, complexity and distinctive smoky-mineral character. Now under the stewardship of the Dillon family, who also own Château Haut-Brion, La Mission Haut-Brion combines centuries of tradition with cutting-edge vineyard management and cellar practices, securing its status as a benchmark for the region. La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion, introduced later as the second wine, offers wine lovers access to this legendary terroir in a more accessible and earlier-drinking expression.
