Description

The 2023 Château La Mission Haut-Brion is a poised, finely structured red Bordeaux from one of Pessac-Léognan’s most revered estates. In a vintage marked by freshness and precision, this wine stands out for its seamless balance of ripe fruit, refined tannins, and complex minerality. Long considered a near-equal to many First Growths, La Mission Haut-Brion continues its legacy in 2023 with a wine that is both immediately captivating and built for decades of evolution.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Château La Mission Haut-Brion shows a deep, vibrant ruby to garnet hue, with a striking clarity that hints at its precision and purity. The nose opens with dark berries—blackcurrant, blackberry, and ripe plum—layered with notes of graphite, cedar, tobacco leaf, and subtle floral tones like violet and dried rose. Underneath sit nuanced hints of cocoa, warm spice, and a distinct smoky-mineral character that is a hallmark of the estate’s gravelly terroir. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a beautiful sense of lift and energy. Ripe black and red fruits are framed by fine-grained, velvety tannins and a vivid, refreshing acidity. Flavors of cassis, black cherry, and forest fruits are interwoven with savory notes of pencil lead, cigar box, and a touch of earth and graphite. The finish is long, focused, and saline, leaving a lingering impression of purity and precision rather than sheer power. While approachable in its youth with some aeration, this 2023 has excellent aging potential and should evolve gracefully for 20–30 years or more, gaining additional complexity and tertiary nuances over time.

Production
Château La Mission Haut-Brion sits on the gravelly, well-drained terroirs of Pessac-Léognan in Bordeaux, where deep gravel, sand, and clay subsoils confer both power and elegance to the wines. The 2023 red is typically based on Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc, sourced from meticulously tended vineyards managed with a strong emphasis on precision viticulture and strict yield control. Grapes are harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, often by hand, to preserve fruit integrity. In the cellar, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, allowing careful extraction of color, aroma, and tannins while maintaining freshness and finesse. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques (a significant proportion new), where it gains structure, aromatic complexity, and textural polish before release.

Food & Serving
The 2023 Château La Mission Haut-Brion pairs beautifully with classic, refined dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, veal chops, or duck breast with a red wine reduction. It also shines alongside dishes featuring earthy components—wild mushrooms, truffles, or root vegetables—as well as aged hard cheeses like Comté or matured Gouda. For optimal enjoyment, serve at about 16–18°C (60–64°F). Young vintages will benefit from decanting for 1–2 hours to allow the aromatics to unfold and the tannins to soften. With bottle age, a shorter decant—just enough to remove sediment and let the wine breathe—will be sufficient.

Producer
Château La Mission Haut-Brion, located in Pessac-Léognan just outside the city of Bordeaux, is one of the most illustrious estates in the region and a historic counterpart to the neighboring Château Haut-Brion. Its history dates back to the 16th century, and over the centuries it has earned a reputation for producing some of the most profound and age-worthy wines of the Graves. Now under the stewardship of Domaine Clarence Dillon, the estate benefits from cutting-edge vineyard management and winemaking expertise while preserving its distinctive style: powerful yet eloquently structured reds with a strong expression of terroir. Frequently rated at the highest levels by international critics, La Mission Haut-Brion is widely regarded as one of Bordeaux’s benchmark wines, often rivaling the classified First Growths in quality and longevity.
