Description
2023 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is the coveted second wine of the legendary Château Haut-Brion, offering a superb glimpse into the estate’s grand vin style at a more approachable level. Crafted from the same privileged terroir and with the same meticulous care as the first wine, this cuvée delivers remarkable depth, refinement, and age‑worthy structure. In the 2023 vintage, Le Clarence showcases the classic Haut-Brion signature of smoky elegance, velvety tannins, and layered complexity in a beautifully poised, modern Bordeaux.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion presents a deep, vibrant ruby-purple hue, with a luminous rim that hints at its youthful energy and precision. The nose is finely etched and expressive: expect aromas of ripe blackcurrants, dark cherries, and wild berries, intertwined with notes of graphite, warm earth, tobacco leaf, and the subtle, distinctive smoky edge that is unmistakably Haut-Brion. Hints of violets, cedar, and cocoa powder emerge with air, adding further nuance and sophistication.
On the palate, this wine is medium to full-bodied, supple, and beautifully balanced, with a core of pure black and red fruit framed by polished, fine-grained tannins. Flavors of cassis, black plum, and redcurrant mingle with savory notes of cigar box, crushed stones, and a gentle toast from well-judged oak. The acidity is fresh and linear, lending lift and precision to the long, focused finish. While already charming in its youth, the structure and concentration suggest a solid aging potential of 10–15 years, with the wine gaining in complexity, softness, and tertiary nuance over time.
Production
Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is sourced from the same gravelly, well-draining soils that define Château Haut-Brion’s historic vineyards in Pessac-Léognan, on the outskirts of Bordeaux. Here, deep layers of gravel, sand, and clay over mineral-rich subsoils give naturally low yields of intensely flavored grapes—predominantly Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Cabernet Franc and often a touch of Petit Verdot in classic Haut-Brion style. Harvesting is carried out by hand, parcel by parcel, with strict selection both in the vineyard and on sorting tables to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy berries are used. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with each plot vinified separately to preserve its individual character before blending. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques, a portion of which are new, allowing for a careful integration of oak, tannin, and fruit while preserving the estate’s hallmark elegance and finesse.
Food & Serving
The 2023 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is a versatile yet gastronomic Bordeaux that shines alongside refined, savory dishes. It pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, beef ribeye, veal chops, or duck breast, as well as classic French fare such as entrecôte Bordelaise, cassoulet, or confit duck with lentils. Earthy accompaniments like wild mushrooms, truffle dishes, roasted root vegetables, and aged hard cheeses (Comté, Tomme, mature cheddar) bring out the wine’s smoky, mineral and savory dimensions. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) in large Bordeaux stems. Young vintages such as 2023 benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to open the bouquet and soften the tannins, though gentle aeration in the glass will also allow the wine to unfold gracefully over the course of a meal.
Producer
Château Haut-Brion is one of Bordeaux’s most storied and revered estates, located in Pessac-Léognan in the Graves, just south of the city of Bordeaux. Recognized as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification—the only estate outside the Médoc to earn this status—Haut-Brion has been celebrated for centuries for its distinctive, smoky, mineral-driven wines of great longevity and elegance. Le Clarence de Haut-Brion, named in honor of Clarence Dillon, whose family has owned the estate since 1935, is the official second wine and reflects the same uncompromising attention to detail in the vineyard and cellar as the grand vin. Today, under the stewardship of Domaine Clarence Dillon, Château Haut-Brion remains a benchmark not only for Pessac-Léognan but for fine wine globally, consistently producing some of the most sought-after and collectible wines in the world.
