Description

The 2023 By Farr GC Chardonnay from the Côte Vineyard is a standout Australian white that combines precision, texture, and site-driven character. Crafted by one of Victoria’s most respected producers, it reflects the elegance and depth that have made By Farr a benchmark for cool-climate Chardonnay in Australia.

Tasting Notes
Pale straw in the glass, this Chardonnay typically shows a refined, luminous appearance with great clarity. The bouquet is expected to offer classic cool-climate Chardonnay aromas: citrus blossom, white peach, ripe pear, and subtle stone fruit, layered with hints of oatmeal, flinty minerality, and integrated French oak. On the palate, it should be concentrated yet poised, with a creamy mid-palate, bright natural acidity, and a long, mineral-driven finish. The wine’s balance of richness and tension suggests excellent development potential, with the ability to gain further complexity over 5–10 years or more under ideal cellaring conditions.

Production
Sourced from the Côte Vineyard in Victoria, the wine benefits from a cool-climate terroir that helps preserve acidity and aromatic finesse while allowing Chardonnay to build depth and texture. By Farr is known for meticulous vineyard work and hand-harvesting, ensuring only the best fruit is selected at optimal ripeness. Vinification is typically focused on expressing vineyard character through careful handling, gentle pressing, and fermentation and maturation in oak to add complexity without overwhelming the fruit. The result is a Chardonnay that feels both expressive and finely structured, with a strong sense of place.

Food & Serving
This Chardonnay pairs beautifully with roast chicken, grilled lobster, pan-seared scallops, or creamy mushroom dishes, as well as rich fish such as turbot or kingfish. Serve chilled at around 10–12°C for the best balance of freshness and texture. Decanting is not essential, but a short period in the glass can help the wine open up if it is served young.

Producer
By Farr is one of Victoria’s most celebrated family-owned wineries, founded by former racing driver Gary Farr and continued with a reputation for producing wines of exceptional detail and site expression. Based in Geelong, the estate has earned a strong following for its Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Shiraz, with a focus on low-intervention winemaking and vineyard precision. The winery is widely regarded as one of Australia’s top producers and has achieved numerous accolades for its elegant, terroir-driven style.
