Description
The 2023 Bodegas El Nido Nido Magnum is a powerful, opulent red from Jumilla that showcases just how luxurious Spanish wine can be. Bottled in magnum format, it’s built for both celebration and cellaring, offering extra elegance and longevity. This cuvée stands as one of the benchmark modern wines of Jumilla, marrying intensity with precision and polish.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 El Nido shows a deep, almost opaque purple-black hue with a vivid rim, signaling youth and concentration. The nose is generous and layered, offering ripe blackberries, blueberry compote and black cherry, intertwined with notes of dark chocolate, espresso, vanilla bean and sweet baking spices, plus hints of graphite, toasted cedar and a touch of Mediterranean herbs.
On the palate, this is full-bodied, rich and velvety, with a core of dense black fruit framed by firm yet refined tannins. Expect flavors of blackcurrant, plum and blackberry liqueur, accented by licorice, mocha, clove and a subtle smokiness from high-quality oak. The finish is long and persistent, with a fine balance between ripe fruit, spice and freshness. In magnum, the 2023 vintage has excellent aging potential: it will be approachable with some air in its youth but should develop added complexity and integration over 10–15 years, and likely longer under proper cellaring.
Production
Sourced from low-yielding vineyards in Jumilla, the 2023 El Nido benefits from the region’s sun-drenched, arid climate and poor, stony soils that naturally limit production and concentrate flavor. Old vines, particularly of local Mediterranean varieties often complemented by international grapes, provide small, intensely flavored berries. Harvest is typically carried out by hand, with careful bunch selection in the vineyard and again on sorting tables at the winery. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks to preserve fruit purity and structure, followed by an extended period of aging in new or mostly new French and American oak barrels, where the wine gains its signature depth, polish and complex layers of spice.
Food & Serving
This is a commanding red that shines alongside richly flavored dishes: think slow-braised lamb shanks, grilled ribeye, Iberico pork, venison stews or short ribs glazed in a red wine reduction. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Manchego curado or Parmigiano Reggiano, and with dishes featuring roasted mushrooms or truffle accents. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting is highly recommended—give it at least 1–2 hours in its youth to allow the aromatics to unfurl and the tannins to soften; older bottles will need a gentler, shorter decant mainly to separate any sediment.
