Description
The 2023 Bodegas El Nido Clio Jeroboam (3L) is a bold, opulent red from Jumilla that showcases the modern face of Spanish wine. Bottled in an impressive Jeroboam format, it’s made for celebrations, serious cellars, and wine lovers who appreciate intensity wrapped in elegance. Clio has become a cult favorite for its rich, Mediterranean character and polished, almost hedonistic style.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Clio is deeply opaque, with a dense, inky purple core and a vivid rim that hints at its youthful power. The nose is generous and seductive, showing layers of ripe blackberries, blueberry compote, and black plum, intertwined with notes of roasted coffee, dark chocolate, sweet baking spices, licorice, and a touch of dried herbs and warm earth.
On the palate, this is full-bodied and concentrated, with velvety tannins and a plush, mouth-filling texture. Ripe black and blue fruits dominate, supported by mocha, vanilla, toasted oak, and a subtle savory edge typical of Jumilla’s sun-drenched Monastrell. The finish is long, warming, and persistent, with a core of sweet fruit framed by fresh acidity that keeps everything in balance. In Jeroboam format, the wine will evolve more slowly and harmoniously; while already enjoyable in its youth after a good decant, it has excellent aging potential over the next 10–15 years, gaining complexity, spice, and tertiary notes with time.
Production
Bodegas El Nido sources fruit for Clio from old, low-yielding vineyards in Jumilla, a high, sun-soaked region in southeastern Spain known for its rocky, poor soils and extreme continental-Mediterranean climate. The combination of intense sunlight, cool nights, and meager soils gives small, concentrated berries, especially from Monastrell, Jumilla’s flagship variety, typically blended here with Cabernet Sauvignon for structure and complexity. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, with strict selection in the vineyard and at the winery. Vinification focuses on extracting rich color and flavor while polishing tannins, often involving temperature-controlled fermentation and long maceration. The wine is then aged in high-quality oak barrels (predominantly French and American) to build its signature layers of spice, toast, and chocolate, resulting in the dense, luxurious style that Clio is known for.
Food & Serving
This powerful red is a natural partner for richly flavored, savory dishes. Think grilled or roasted lamb with rosemary, slow-braised beef or oxtail, Iberico pork, game dishes, and hearty stews, as well as aged Manchego or other firm, mature cheeses. Its dark fruit and spice also complement barbecued meats with smoky, slightly sweet glazes. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to keep the alcohol and richness in balance. In Jeroboam format, plan for a generous decant: at least 2–3 hours for young bottles, and even longer if you want to see the wine fully open up. Large-bowl glasses will help showcase its aromatic complexity and texture.
Producer
Bodegas El Nido was founded in the early 2000s in Jumilla and quickly gained international recognition as one of Spain’s modern icons, largely thanks to its collaboration with renowned winemaker and consultant Chris Ringland. The project focuses on old-vine Monastrell, often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, to craft deeply concentrated, polished wines that have earned consistently high scores from leading critics. In a region once known primarily for rustic bulk wines, Bodegas El Nido helped redefine Jumilla’s image, proving that its old vines and extreme terroir can produce world-class, cellar-worthy reds. Clio, in particular, has become a benchmark wine for powerful yet refined Mediterranean reds and a sought-after bottle among collectors and enthusiasts alike.
