Description
The 2023 Bernardus Pinot Noir Santa Lucia Highlands captures the pure, cool-climate elegance that has made this AVA one of California’s benchmarks for Pinot. Sourced from select vineyards in the wind-swept hills overlooking the Salinas Valley, it offers a vibrant, terroir-driven expression with finely etched fruit and supple structure. This bottling brings together Bernardus’ European sensibility and California sunshine, delivering a Pinot that’s both immediately charming and quietly serious.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Pinot Noir typically shows a bright ruby to medium garnet hue, with a translucent edge that hints at its finesse-driven style. The nose is lifted and expressive, with aromas of wild strawberry, ripe cherry and raspberry compote layered over rose petals, baking spice, and a touch of forest floor and sandalwood from French oak aging.
On the palate, expect a silky, medium-bodied wine with juicy red fruit at its core—think red cherry, cranberry and pomegranate—wrapped in notes of clove, vanilla, and a subtle savory edge. Fine-grained tannins and lively, coastal acidity keep everything in balance, giving the wine both freshness and length. While beautifully approachable in its youth, the 2023 vintage has the structure to develop additional complexity over the next 5–7 years, gaining more earthy, truffle and spice nuances with time in bottle.
Production
This Pinot Noir is crafted from premium vineyards in the Santa Lucia Highlands, a cool, elevated appellation influenced by Pacific Ocean breezes and morning fog. The region’s decomposed granite and gravelly loam soils naturally limit yields, concentrating flavor and preserving acidity. Grapes are typically hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, then carefully sorted to ensure only the best fruit makes it into the fermenters. Bernardus favors small-lot vinification, with Pinot Noir fermented in open-top vessels to allow gentle punch-downs for color and tannin extraction. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels—often with a judicious portion of new oak—to add texture and complexity without overshadowing the purity of the fruit.
Food & Serving
This Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir is a flexible partner at the table, pairing beautifully with roasted duck, herb-crusted pork loin, cedar-plank salmon, or mushroom risotto. It also shines alongside charcuterie, soft-rind cheeses, and dishes featuring earthy herbs like thyme or rosemary. For ideal enjoyment, serve slightly cool, around 14–16°C (57–61°F). A brief decant of 20–30 minutes can help the aromatics open up, especially in the wine’s first few years, but it will also show well poured directly into generous Burgundy-style stemware.
Producer
Bernardus Winery was founded by Dutchman Ben Pon, whose vision was to create world-class wines in California that could stand alongside the great regions of Europe. Based in Carmel Valley and working extensively with top coastal sites like the Santa Lucia Highlands, Bernardus quickly became recognized for its refined, Old World–inspired approach to New World fruit. Over the years, the estate has earned a strong reputation for Chardonnay, Bordeaux-style blends, and particularly Pinot Noir that highlights the character of Monterey County’s coolest, most expressive vineyards. Today, Bernardus is considered one of the key names in the broader Central Coast region, known for meticulous vineyard sourcing, attentive winemaking, and wines that consistently deliver both quality and a strong sense of place.
