Description

The 2023 Bernardus Chardonnay Monterey County is a rich yet finely balanced expression of cool-climate California Chardonnay. Crafted from handpicked fruit and shaped by thoughtful barrel work, it delivers the creamy, buttery profile many Chardonnay lovers seek, lifted by fresh coastal acidity. This wine showcases Monterey’s maritime influence, where ocean breezes and fog help develop intensity of flavor without sacrificing elegance.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Chardonnay shows a bright, light golden yellow hue with inviting brilliance. The nose is immediately expressive, offering intense aromas of white flowers and acacia, layered with ripe exotic fruits such as pineapple and mango, and underpinned by notes of vanilla, sweet spice, and a hint of toasted oak. On the palate, the wine is generous and rounded, with a creamy texture and a satisfying sense of weight. Flavors of ripe stone fruit and tropical fruit are interwoven with classic butter and vanilla tones from barrel aging, along with subtle baking spice and a touch of nuttiness. Despite its richness, a fresh, maritime-driven acidity keeps everything in balance and carries through to a long, powerful finish. Enjoy it now for its vivid, youthful fruit and plush mouthfeel; it should drink beautifully over the next 3–5 years, gaining a bit more integration and complexity with short-term cellaring.

Production
The Chardonnay grapes for Bernardus Monterey County are sourced from vineyards influenced by the cool, maritime climate of Monterey Bay, where morning fogs, afternoon winds, and moderate temperatures allow for slow, even ripening and excellent flavor development. The fruit is harvested by hand to ensure careful selection and minimal damage to the grapes, then gently pressed to preserve purity and freshness. About 90% of the juice is fermented in French oak barrels—approximately one-third of which are new—to impart texture, creaminess, and those signature butter and vanilla notes, while the remaining 10% is fermented in stainless steel to retain brightness and lift. The combination of barrel and tank fermentation creates a Chardonnay that is both opulent and well-structured, with layered complexity and a clean, vibrant finish.

Food & Serving
This is a classic food-friendly, full-bodied Chardonnay that pairs beautifully with rich seafood dishes like lobster with drawn butter, seared scallops, or crab cakes, as well as roasted chicken, turkey, or creamy pasta with mushrooms or poultry. It also works well with soft, buttery cheeses and mildly spiced dishes that complement its ripe fruit and oak-driven nuances. Serve at around 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight both its freshness and its creamy, layered complexity. A brief decant of 15–20 minutes, or simply opening the bottle a little before serving, will help the wine open up aromatically and show its full range of floral, fruity, and toasty notes.

Producer
Bernardus Winery was founded in 1989 by Ben Pon, a former Dutch racing driver and member of the Pon family, well known as importers of marques such as Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche. Drawn to the hills behind Carmel Valley Village, Pon acquired land with the ambition of crafting wines that could stand alongside the great Bordeaux and Grand Crus of the world. While the estate vineyards in Carmel Valley are planted primarily to Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Sauvignon Blanc, Bernardus sources its Chardonnay from the cooler, maritime corners of Monterey County to capture freshness and varietal precision. Over the years, Bernardus has become a respected name in California’s Central Coast, recognized for its commitment to quality, its thoughtful use of terroir across several appellations, and its polished, characterful wines that bridge Old World sensibility with New World generosity.
