Description
The 2023 Álvaro Palacios La Baixada is a rare and highly sought-after Garnacha from the dramatic, terraced slopes of Priorat. Sourced from a single, steep vineyard in Gratallops, it combines Mediterranean richness with striking finesse and depth. This cuvée showcases Álvaro Palacios’ talent for crafting wines that are both intensely expressive and elegantly sculpted, reflecting one of Priorat’s most exciting terroirs.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 La Baixada typically shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with a youthful purple hue at the rim, hinting at its concentration and energy. The nose is layered and refined, with aromas of ripe red and black cherries, wild strawberries, red plum, and macerated raspberries framed by notes of violets, Mediterranean herbs, licorice, crushed stone, and a subtle touch of sweet spice and cacao from élevage.
On the palate, expect a precise, silky expression of Garnacha: juicy yet finely structured, with pure red fruit at the core, supported by mineral tension and polished tannins. Flavors of cherry, blood orange zest, pomegranate, and warm spices unfold gradually, leading into a long, saline and stony finish that speaks clearly of Priorat’s llicorella (slate) soils. The 2023 vintage should have excellent aging potential; while it can be enjoyed in its vibrant youth after a short aeration, it will reward patience over 10–15 years as the tannins integrate further and the mineral and savory notes gain complexity.
Production
La Baixada comes from a steep, terraced single vineyard in Gratallops, rooted in classic Priorat llicorella – dark, friable slate that forces the vines to dig deep for water and nutrients, naturally limiting yields and concentrating flavor. The Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry days, cooling breezes and marked diurnal shifts, helps preserve acidity and aromatic freshness in the Garnacha. Grapes are typically harvested by hand in small crates to ensure impeccable fruit selection on the slope and again at the winery. Vinification usually involves gentle destemming and fermentation in tank or large wooden vessels, with indigenous yeasts and careful extraction to highlight finesse over power. The wine is then aged in high-quality oak (often large foudres or barrels) to refine texture and complexity without overwhelming the purity of fruit and the site’s distinctive mineral profile.
Food & Serving
This refined Priorat red pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted lamb, herb-crusted pork, venison, or game birds, as well as richer Mediterranean dishes featuring tomato, roasted peppers, and aromatic herbs like rosemary and thyme. It also works well with aged Manchego, hard sheep’s cheeses, and deeply flavored mushroom dishes or slow-braised stews. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F); if opened in its first years, decant for 1–2 hours to allow the wine to open and soften. With more bottle age, a shorter 30–45 minute decant will help it express its full aromatic complexity.
Producer
Álvaro Palacios is one of Spain’s most influential and celebrated winemakers, widely credited with helping to spearhead the modern renaissance of Priorat in the late 20th century. After gaining experience in Bordeaux at Château Pétrus, he arrived in Priorat in the late 1980s, drawn by its ancient vines, dramatic slate terroir and forgotten potential. From his base in Gratallops, he crafted benchmark wines that showed the world just how profound Priorat Garnacha and Carinyena could be. Today, his eponymous estate stands as a reference point in the region, consistently receiving international acclaim for wines that unite intensity with elegance, precision and a strong sense of place – qualities clearly embodied in La Baixada.
