Description

The 2023 Algueira Cornamús Ribeira Sacra is a finely crafted white wine from the dramatic river valleys of northwestern Spain. Drawing on the steep, terraced vineyards that define Ribeira Sacra, this wine showcases the freshness, minerality, and precision that have made the region one of Spain’s most exciting sources of distinctive whites. It’s an elegant yet characterful bottle, ideal for those seeking something beyond the usual Iberian classics. Its unique selling point lies in its origin: old, low-yielding vines rooted in slate and schist on vertiginous slopes overlooking the Sil and Miño rivers, giving the wine striking tension and a saline, stony finish. Crafted from traditional local white varieties and made in small quantities, Cornamús is a clear expression of Atlantic-influenced, cool-climate Galicia. Ribeira Sacra has a long monastic winegrowing history, and Algueira is among the modern producers who have revived this heritage, focusing on purity, finesse, and a strong sense of place.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Algueira Cornamús shows a pale straw to light lemon hue with greenish reflections, signaling its youthful freshness and vibrancy. The nose is lifted and precise, offering notes of citrus zest (lemon and grapefruit), white flowers, and fresh orchard fruits like green apple and pear. Underneath the fruit, you’ll find a chalky, slate-driven minerality, hints of fennel or wild herbs, and a subtle saline edge that evokes sea air and wet stone. On the palate, this is a crisp, finely etched white with medium body and a zesty, linear acidity. Flavors of citrus, crunchy apple, and ripe pear are layered with delicate floral notes and a distinct mineral backbone. The texture is clean and focused rather than creamy, with a long, lingering finish where citrus, herbs, and stony nuances echo together. Enjoyable in its youth for its energy and precision, the 2023 vintage should also develop nicely over the next 3–5 years, gaining a bit more complexity and roundness while retaining its freshness.

Production
Cornamús is sourced from steep, terraced vineyards in Ribeira Sacra, where vines cling to slate and schist soils above the winding river valleys. This rugged terroir, combined with a cool Atlantic influence, produces grapes with excellent natural acidity, aromatic intensity, and a pronounced mineral character. Harvest is typically carried out by hand due to the extreme slopes, allowing careful selection of healthy, optimally ripe bunches. In the cellar, Algueira favors a gentle, minimalist approach: the grapes are usually softly pressed and the must is fermented at controlled temperatures in stainless steel or neutral vessels to preserve freshness and varietal purity. Any subsequent aging tends to be on fine lees, adding subtle texture and complexity without masking the wine’s bright, terroir-driven profile.

Food & Serving
The 2023 Algueira Cornamús Ribeira Sacra is a versatile partner for a wide range of dishes, especially those that echo its coastal and mineral character. It pairs beautifully with seafood—think grilled prawns, octopus, clams, mussels, and simply prepared white fish—as well as Galician-style pulpo, ceviche, or sushi. It also complements lightly sauced chicken, fresh goat’s cheese, vegetable tart, and tapas featuring olives, almonds, and mild cured meats. Serve chilled, ideally at 8–10°C (46–50°F), to highlight its brightness and aromatics. Decanting is not essential, but opening the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving or giving it a quick splash into a carafe can help the wine open up aromatically.

Producer
Algueira is one of the key names in the modern renaissance of Ribeira Sacra, a region whose winegrowing roots stretch back to Roman times and were nurtured for centuries by monks farming impossibly steep river terraces. Based along the Sil River, Algueira has built its reputation on meticulous vineyard work and a deep respect for local grape varieties, both red and white. The estate’s focus on heroic viticulture—hand-tending and harvesting vines on near-vertical slopes—results in wines that are intensely expressive of their origin. Algueira is widely regarded as a benchmark producer in Ribeira Sacra, helping to bring international attention to the region through its precise, mineral-driven wines that faithfully mirror the rugged beauty of their landscape.
