Description
2022 Villa Sant'Anna Chianti Colli Senesi is a vibrant, classically styled Tuscan red that captures the easy charm and authenticity of hillside vineyards around Siena. Crafted predominantly from Sangiovese, it offers a beautifully balanced expression of fruit, freshness, and gentle structure that’s perfect for both weekday dinners and casual gatherings. As part of the Colli Senesi subzone—historically prized for its expressive, approachable Chianti—this wine bridges tradition and modern drinkability with effortless grace.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Chianti shows a bright ruby-red color with youthful violet reflections, hinting at its energy and freshness. The nose opens with a generous mix of red cherries, wild strawberries, and crushed raspberries, layered with notes of dried herbs, violet, and a touch of sweet spice and subtle earth.
On the palate, 2022 Villa Sant'Anna Chianti Colli Senesi is medium-bodied and supple, with juicy red fruit at its core and the signature Sangiovese acidity giving lift and precision. Fine-grained tannins frame flavors of cherry, red plum, and a hint of blood orange, followed by nuances of thyme, cedar, and a gentle savory note on the finish. It is crafted to be enjoyed in its youth for its freshness and charm, but it will comfortably develop for 3–5 years, gaining a bit more softness and complexity over time.
Production
Villa Sant'Anna sources its Chianti Colli Senesi from vineyards planted on the rolling hills around Montepulciano and Siena, where clay-limestone and sandy soils, along with good elevation and breezy exposures, contribute to bright fruit and lively acidity. Grapes—primarily Sangiovese, with small traditional local varieties often included for nuance—are harvested by hand to ensure careful selection. In the cellar, fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled tanks to preserve purity of fruit, followed by maturation in a combination of stainless steel and large neutral oak, allowing the wine’s classic Tuscan character to shine without heavy new oak influence.
Food & Serving
This Chianti Colli Senesi is a natural partner for Italian comfort food and rustic Mediterranean dishes. It pairs beautifully with tomato-based pasta sauces, pizza with cured meats, grilled sausages, roasted chicken, and classic Tuscan fare like ribollita or crostini with chicken liver pâté. It also works very well with hard cheeses such as Pecorino Toscano and Parmigiano Reggiano. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F); a brief 20–30 minute aeration in the bottle or a small carafe will help the aromas open up, but extended decanting is not required.
Producer
Villa Sant'Anna is a family-owned estate located just outside Montepulciano in southern Tuscany, an area long celebrated for its Sangiovese-based wines. The winery has spent decades refining a style that balances regional tradition with a precise, quality-focused approach in the vineyard and cellar. While known for its Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Villa Sant'Anna’s Chianti Colli Senesi showcases the estate’s broader expertise with Sangiovese and its ability to deliver characterful, terroir-driven wines at approachable price points. Consistent critical recognition and a loyal following among Tuscan wine lovers have cemented its reputation as a dependable producer of authentic, expressive central Italian reds.
