Description
The 2022 Tiefenbrunner Feldmarschall von Fenner is one of Alto Adige’s true modern classics, a stunning high‑altitude white that shows just how elegant Müller-Thurgau can be in the right hands. Sourced from some of the highest vineyards in Europe, this wine marries Alpine freshness with surprising depth and complexity. Named after the 19th‑century Austrian field marshal Franz Philipp von Fenner zu Fennberg, it has earned a cult following among drinkers who seek precision, minerality, and finesse in their whites.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Feldmarschall von Fenner is a bright, pale straw with subtle green reflections, hinting at its youthful energy and mountain origins. The nose is wonderfully expressive yet refined: lifted aromas of white flowers, elderflower, and alpine herbs mingle with notes of lime zest, green apple, and pear, backed by hints of wet stone, nutmeg, and a delicate, cool spice.
On the palate, this Müller-Thurgau is anything but simple. It’s medium-bodied yet very taut, with a crystalline acidity that cuts through the wine’s ripe orchard and citrus fruit. Flavors of crunchy pear, green apple, and Meyer lemon are layered with salty minerality, dried chamomile, and a gentle, almost smoky nuance from the high-altitude terroir. The finish is long, precise, and mouthwatering, with lingering notes of citrus peel and herbs. While already beautifully drinkable now, the 2022 has the structure and tension to develop for 5–8 years, gaining more honeyed, nutty, and floral complexity in bottle.
Production
The grapes for Feldmarschall von Fenner come from the steep, terraced vineyards of Fennberg in Alto Adige, planted at altitudes of around 1,000 meters above sea level—among the highest white wine sites in the region. The cool Alpine climate, extreme diurnal temperature swings, and mineral-rich, well-drained soils create an ideal environment for slow, even ripening and intense aroma development. Yields are kept deliberately low, and harvesting is done by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy clusters make it into the winery. After gentle pressing, the must is typically fermented at controlled, cool temperatures in stainless steel to preserve the delicate aromatics and natural acidity of Müller-Thurgau. The wine then rests on its fine lees for an extended period, adding texture, subtle complexity, and a refined, almost creamy mid-palate without sacrificing purity or freshness.
Food & Serving
This is a highly versatile food wine that shines with refined, delicate dishes. Pair it with freshwater fish such as trout or char, seafood crudo, ceviche, or simply grilled prawns; it also works beautifully with vegetable-focused plates like asparagus, artichokes, or seasonal salads, as well as mild goat cheese, fresh ricotta, and soft-rind cheeses. Classic Alpine dishes—speck, light pasta with herbs, or gnocchi with brown butter and sage—also find a perfect partner here. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally at 8–10°C (46–50°F) to fully express the aromatics and minerality. Decanting is not essential, but opening the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving, or using a larger glass, will help the wine open up and reveal its full aromatic spectrum.
Producer
Tiefenbrunner is one of Alto Adige’s most respected family estates, with roots in viticulture at Schloss Turmhof dating back to the mid‑19th century. Over generations, the family has helped define the reputation of Alto Adige as a source of precise, age-worthy mountain wines, long before the region became widely recognized on the international stage. The Feldmarschall von Fenner bottling, first produced in the 1970s from an elevated Müller-Thurgau site that many considered too extreme for quality wine, has become the estate’s flagship white and a benchmark for the grape worldwide. Tiefenbrunner’s commitment to meticulous vineyard work, sustainable practices, and a restrained, terroir-driven style has earned them a loyal following and critical acclaim, cementing their status as a cornerstone producer in northern Italy.
