Description

The 2022 Teso la Monja Victorino Magnum showcases the power and precision of Toro in a generous 1.5L format, perfect for the table or the cellar. Sourced exclusively from old vineyards and crafted from 100% Tinta de Toro (the local clone of Tempranillo), it is a deeply concentrated yet polished red that captures the character of this historic region. With its origins in pre-phylloxera heritage and the expertise of the Eguren family, Victorino has quickly become one of the benchmark wines of Toro.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Victorino Magnum is intensely colored, near opaque with a deep purple core and a vivid ruby rim that hints at its youth and energy. The nose is powerful and layered, offering blackberries, black cherries and plum compote wrapped in notes of cocoa, espresso, dried herbs, graphite and a subtle smokiness from its time in French oak. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, richly textured Toro with impressive concentration and length. Ripe black fruits dominate at first—blackberry, blackcurrant, dark cherry—followed by notes of cocoa, licorice, toasted spice, mineral undertones and a touch of balsamic. The tannins are abundant yet ripe and velvety, providing structure without harshness, while fresh acidity keeps the wine balanced and prevents the richness from feeling heavy. The finish is long, savory and persistent, with lingering dark fruit, spice and mineral tones. In magnum, the wine has excellent aging potential; it will drink well from release but should evolve beautifully over 10–15 years, and likely beyond, gaining further complexity and integration.

Production
The grapes for Victorino are sourced from select parcels in Zamora, Valdefinjas and Villabuena, in the heart of DO Toro, at elevations between 650 and 800 meters. The soils are predominantly sandy with some gravel and clay, a key factor in preserving many ungrafted, pre-phylloxera vines, as the sandy texture prevents the phylloxera louse from taking hold. For Victorino, only old vines of Tinta de Toro are used, with the fruit coming from vineyards 45 years and older, many much older. The yield is kept extremely low, around 15 hl/ha, to maximize concentration and depth. Grapes are harvested entirely by hand and collected in small crates to avoid damage and oxidation, then carefully sorted at the winery. Vinification is geared towards extracting color, aroma and structure while preserving finesse, followed by 15 months of aging in French oak barrels, which contributes complexity, subtle toast and spice without overwhelming the character of the fruit and terroir.

Food & Serving
This is a serious, gastronomic red built for hearty, flavorful dishes. It pairs beautifully with roasted or grilled lamb, ribeye or sirloin steak, slow-braised beef cheeks, venison and other game, as well as rich stews and casseroles. Classic Spanish pairings include Iberico pork, chorizo, morcilla, and aged hard cheeses such as Manchego or Zamorano. Serve at 16–18°C; in magnum, the wine benefits from aeration, so decant 1–2 hours before serving to allow the aromas and texture to fully open up.

Producer
Teso la Monja is the flagship Toro project of the renowned Eguren family, one of Spain’s most respected wine dynasties. Previously known for creating the iconic Numanthia and Termanthia estates (later sold to Moët & Chandon), the Egurens returned to Toro with Teso la Monja, selecting exceptional old-vine parcels in Zamora, Valdefinjas and Villabuena. Their goal has been to express the full potential of Tinta de Toro with greater refinement, balance and elegance, without losing the natural power of the region. Since its inception, Teso la Monja has become a reference point in Toro, consistently earning acclaim for its depth, precision and the way it honors the area’s unique pre-phylloxera heritage.
