Description

Victorino 2022 from Teso La Monja is one of the benchmark reds of Toro, crafted from old-vine Tinta de Toro (the local clone of Tempranillo) grown on high-altitude, sandy soils. This is a powerful yet polished Spanish red that showcases the intensity and depth that have made the region famous, while remaining impeccably balanced and refined. Sourced from ungrafted vines—some of the rare pre-phylloxera survivors in Europe—it offers a direct link to the authentic, original character of Toro.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Victorino is deeply opaque, with an almost ink-black core and a dense purple rim that hints at its concentration and youth. The nose opens with a cascade of ripe black fruits—blackberry, black cherry, and plum—interwoven with notes of cocoa, dark chocolate, wild herbs, and a distinct mineral edge. Subtle tones of toasted oak, spice, and a touch of smoke reflect its élevage in French barrels without overwhelming the fruit. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, richly textured wine with impressive density and precision. Layers of ripe black fruit are framed by mineral undertones, savory herbs, and fine-grained, ripe tannins that give both structure and length. Nuances of cocoa, roasted coffee, and sweet baking spices emerge with air, adding complexity to the long, persistent finish. While already approachable with proper aeration, the 2022 Victorino has the concentration, structure, and acidity to evolve beautifully for 10–15 years or more in the cellar.

Production
The grapes for Victorino come from carefully selected parcels in Zamora, Valdefinjas, and Villabuena, planted predominantly on sandy soils at 650–800 meters above sea level. This terroir, with its sandy composition, is key to preserving ungrafted vines, as it prevents the phylloxera louse from tunneling, making these vineyards some of the few that survived the devastation that destroyed most of Europe’s vineyards. The vines used for Victorino are at least 45 years old, many considerably older, naturally limiting yields to a very low 15 hl/ha and concentrating flavor. All grapes are harvested by hand and collected in small crates to protect the fruit. After a careful selection, the wine is vinified with a focus on purity and extraction of fine tannins, then aged for about 15 months in French oak barrels, allowing the power of Tinta de Toro to integrate with subtle oak complexity.

Food & Serving
Victorino 2022 is a superb match for hearty, flavorful dishes: think grilled or roasted lamb, ribeye steak, slow-braised beef, game (venison, wild boar), or richly spiced stews. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses, charcuterie, and dishes featuring mushrooms, rosemary, or smoked elements. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. Decanting is strongly recommended—give it at least 1–2 hours in a decanter in its youth to soften the tannins and allow the complex layers of fruit, spice, and minerality to unfold.

Producer
Teso La Monja is the new chapter for the renowned Eguren family in Toro, following the sale of their iconic estates Numanthia and Termanthia to Moët & Chandon. Determined to push the region’s potential even further, the family secured exceptional vineyard sites in Zamora, Valdefinjas, and Villabuena, planted entirely with Tinta de Toro on predominantly sandy, high-altitude soils. Within a short period, Teso La Monja has earned a reputation as one of the leading producers in the DO Toro, crafting wines that combine power, elegance, and a strong sense of place. Victorino stands as one of the estate’s flagship bottlings, consistently praised for its concentration, finesse, and its authentic expression of old-vine Toro.
