Description
The 2022 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore in magnum format is a commanding expression of one of Italy’s most iconic Super Tuscans. Crafted on the Tuscan coast in Bolgheri, this wine marries Bordeaux-inspired elegance with Mediterranean warmth, offering both immediate pleasure and serious aging potential. The magnum bottling enhances its grandeur at the table, while also ensuring a slower, more graceful evolution over time. Renowned for its precision, depth, and consistency, Ornellaia stands out as a benchmark for modern Italian fine wine. The 2022 vintage continues the estate’s tradition of blending predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with supporting roles from Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, delivering a wine that is at once opulent and refined. Since its debut in the mid-1980s, Ornellaia has helped define the Bolgheri style and has become a collector’s staple worldwide.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore shows a deep, intense ruby color with youthful purple highlights, signaling both concentration and vitality. The nose opens with layers of ripe blackcurrant, dark cherry, and plum, intertwined with notes of graphite, cedar, and tobacco leaf. Subtle hints of Mediterranean herbs, sweet spices, cocoa, and a touch of violets add complexity as the wine slowly unfurls in the glass.
On the palate, this is full-bodied and structured yet impeccably balanced, with a core of dark, juicy fruit wrapped in finely polished tannins. Flavors of cassis, blackberry, and black cherry are complemented by mocha, licorice, and a mineral undercurrent that reflects its coastal origins. The oak is present but well-integrated, lending texture and sweetness without overpowering the fruit. The finish is long, precise, and savory, with lingering notes of spice and graphite, indicating a wine built for both power and finesse. While already impressive in its youth, this 2022 Ornellaia in magnum is particularly well-suited for cellaring and can be expected to evolve gracefully for 15–25 years, gaining complexity, tertiary notes, and silkier texture over time.
Production
Tenuta dell’Ornellaia lies just a few kilometers from the Tyrrhenian Sea in Bolgheri, an area defined by its maritime climate, cooling breezes, and a patchwork of gravel, clay, and sandy soils reminiscent in spirit of the great vineyards of Bordeaux. This diversity of terroir allows the estate to cultivate Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot in parcels that each express a distinct personality, later brought together in the final Ornellaia blend. Harvesting is conducted parcel by parcel, typically by hand, to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes make it to the cellar. After careful sorting, the grapes undergo fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel and concrete tanks, with maceration tailored to each lot to extract color, aroma, and tannin without harshness. The individual lots are then aged separately in French oak barriques (a significant portion new) for around 18 months before blending. Following assemblage, the wine rests further in bottle to harmonize before release, with the magnum format offering an especially slow, refined maturation curve.
Food & Serving
The 2022 Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore Magnum is a natural partner for refined, richly flavored dishes. It shines alongside grilled or roasted red meats such as bistecca alla fiorentina, dry-aged ribeye, or lamb racks with rosemary and garlic. It also pairs beautifully with game dishes, braised short ribs, truffle-infused preparations, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Toscano. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Given its youth and structure, decanting is strongly recommended: 1–2 hours for more aromatic expression and softer tannins if drinking now. As the wine ages, a shorter decant to remove sediment and allow it to open gently will suffice, particularly with the magnum’s slower development.
Producer
Tenuta dell’Ornellaia was founded in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori and quickly rose to prominence as one of the leading names of the Super Tuscan movement. Located in Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast, the estate helped transform the region from an emerging curiosity into one of Italy’s most esteemed appellations for Bordeaux-style blends. Over the decades, Ornellaia has consistently received top international accolades and critical scores, cementing its reputation as one of Italy’s blue-chip collectible wines. Now under the ownership of the Frescobaldi family, the estate continues to refine its approach, combining meticulous vineyard management with cutting-edge winemaking and a deep respect for Bolgheri’s unique maritime terroir. Ornellaia’s flagship Bolgheri Superiore is regarded as a reference point for elegance, complexity, and longevity in modern Italian wine.
