Description
The 2022 Telmo Rodríguez Branco de Santa Cruz is a refined, mineral-driven white from the steep, slate-rich slopes of Valdeorras in northwestern Spain. Crafted from old vines and native varieties, it captures the tension, texture and Atlantic freshness that have made this corner of Galicia a favorite among serious white wine lovers. This is a quietly complex, ageworthy white that rewards both curiosity and patience.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Branco de Santa Cruz shows a pale straw to light lemon hue, with a slight green edge that hints at its vibrancy and youth. The nose is expressive yet precise, layering notes of lemon zest, white peach and crisp pear with wild herbs, fennel, chamomile and a distinct stony minerality reminiscent of wet slate and sea spray.
On the palate, the wine is finely textured and focused, with a core of citrus and orchard fruit supported by saline, mineral tones and a gentle, savory grip. Expect flavors of Meyer lemon, green apple and juicy pear, intertwined with hints of almond, subtle smoke and dried herbs. The acidity is bright but beautifully integrated, giving the wine both tension and length. While already approachable in its youth, this cuvée has the structure to develop greater complexity over 5–8 years, gaining more nuttiness, honeyed notes and depth with time in bottle.
Production
Branco de Santa Cruz is sourced from old-vine, high-altitude parcels around the village of Santa Cruz in Valdeorras, where poor, rocky slate and granite soils, cool nights and Atlantic influences shape wines of remarkable freshness and minerality. The vineyards are traditionally planted with local white varieties such as Godello, Treixadura and Doña Branca, often intermingled in old field blends. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to preserve fruit integrity and to allow careful selection on these steep, terraced slopes. Vinification is deliberately low-intervention: gentle pressing, native yeast fermentation and aging on fine lees in a mix of neutral oak and/or larger vessels help build texture and complexity without masking the purity of the fruit or the character of the terroir.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile gastronomic white that shines alongside refined seafood and subtly flavored dishes. It pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted white fish, shellfish (especially scallops, clams and prawns), octopus, simple preparations of chicken, and vegetable-based plates such as grilled asparagus, artichokes, or mushroom risotto. It also works well with soft-ripened cheeses and lightly aged goat cheese. Serve chilled but not icy, ideally around 10–12°C, to allow the aromatics to fully unfold. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes, or simply opening the bottle ahead of serving, can help the wine open up and reveal its layered, mineral-driven character.
Producer
Telmo Rodríguez is one of Spain’s most respected and influential winemakers, renowned for reviving historic vineyards and championing indigenous grape varieties across the country. After training in Bordeaux and the Rhône, he returned to Spain and began seeking out high-potential but often overlooked sites, working with old vines and traditional varieties to produce wines of place rather than style. In Valdeorras, his work has been instrumental in showcasing the quality potential of Godello-based whites from steep, slate and granite slopes influenced by the Atlantic climate. Telmo Rodríguez’s wines regularly earn critical acclaim and are considered benchmarks in their respective regions, combining precision, authenticity and elegance in every bottle.
