Description
The 2022 Schäfer-Fröhlich Stromberg Riesling Grosses Gewächs is a riveting dry Riesling from one of the Nahe’s most dramatic terroirs, crafted by one of Germany’s most acclaimed winemakers. Sourced from old vines rooted in volcanic porphyry, this GG delivers an intense, tightly focused expression of minerality, spice, and precision. As a VDP.Grosse Lage bottling, it stands among the very top tier of German dry Rieslings, combining site-specific character with impressive aging potential.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Stromberg GG 2022 shows a very pale, shimmering lemon hue with green reflections, signaling its youthful tension and freshness. The nose is finely etched and initially reserved, opening gradually to reveal cool citrus (lime zest, grapefruit), white peach, crushed slate, and smoky, flinty mineral tones, with hints of white flowers and a subtle herbal spice.
On the palate, the wine is strikingly elegant yet dense, with a razor-sharp, linear structure that carries tremendous concentration from the 60-year-old vines. Very bright and crystalline, it shows layers of lemon, lime, and stone fruit wrapped in a deep, stony minerality, complemented by delicate spice and a distinct salty, almost savory finish. The texture is both tight and silky, with vibrant acidity that promises a long evolution in bottle. While already thrilling in its youth, this Grosses Gewächs has excellent aging potential and should develop even greater complexity and nuance over 10–15+ years.
Production
Stromberg is a steep, rocky site in the Nahe, characterized by weathered porphyry, a magmatic volcanic rock that imparts a cool, smoky, and intensely mineral signature to the wines. The old Riesling vines here average around 60 years of age, naturally limiting yields and concentrating flavor and structure in the grapes. Schäfer-Fröhlich is known for meticulous work in the vineyard, with selective hand harvesting at optimal ripeness to preserve tension and finesse. In the cellar, Tim Fröhlich favors spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts—he is often called the “master of spontaneous fermentation”—and a patient, non-interventionist approach that allows the terroir to speak clearly. Gentle pressing, careful handling of the must, and élevage in stainless steel and/or large traditional vessels (depending on the cuvée) all contribute to the wine’s purity, precision, and finely etched mineral profile.
Food & Serving
This is a serious gastronomic Riesling that shines alongside refined, subtly prepared dishes. Think sashimi and crudo, oysters and other shellfish, ceviche, steamed or grilled white fish, and delicately spiced Asian cuisine (such as sushi, tempura, or lightly spiced Thai dishes). It also pairs beautifully with fine poultry, veal, or pork in light, citrus- or herb-driven sauces, as well as vegetable-based dishes featuring fennel, asparagus, or root vegetables. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 9–11°C (48–52°F), to allow the aromatics and texture to unfurl. A brief decant of 30–60 minutes for young bottles can help the wine open up, especially if enjoyed in its first few years.
Producer
Schäfer-Fröhlich is one of the leading estates in the Nahe and a reference point for contemporary German Riesling. Under the direction of Tim Fröhlich, the winery has seen a meteoric rise in both reputation and demand, with each vintage marking a new benchmark in precision and quality. The estate is a member of the VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter), Germany’s elite association of top growers, and works some of the region’s finest Grosse Lage and Erste Lage sites. Tim’s wines are celebrated for their crystalline clarity, profound minerality, and perfectly judged balance of fruit and structure. His Rieslings—both dry and sweet—have repeatedly taken top honors in major German tastings, including wins at the “Königsdisziplinen des German Rieslings” and leading rankings in Gault Millau, reinforcing Schäfer-Fröhlich’s status as one of Germany’s most important and exciting Riesling producers.
