Description
The 2022 Schäfer-Fröhlich Frühlingsplätzchen Riesling Grosses Gewächs is a striking dry Riesling from one of the Nahe’s most coveted ‘Grosse Lage’ sites. Sourced from very old vines rooted in shallow red slate, it captures the tension between crystalline fruit, intense minerality and precision. As a VDP.Grosses Gewächs, it represents the German equivalent of a Grand Cru dry Riesling, built for both immediate fascination and long-term aging.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this wine shows a pale, luminous straw color with green highlights, hinting at its youthful energy and freshness. The nose is bright and finely etched, opening with notes of lemon zest, lime and white grapefruit, wrapped around a core of crushed slate, wet stone and subtle herbal spice. Hints of white flowers and a delicate smoky nuance add complexity as it unfolds in the glass.
On the palate, the 2022 Frühlingsplätzchen GG is taut, saline and laser-precise, yet with a surprising succulence of citrus and stone fruit at its core. The texture is sleek and finely grained, with racy acidity driving pure flavors of lemon peel, green apple, lime and a touch of white peach, all underscored by intense, slate-driven minerality. The finish is long, stony and slightly spicy, leaving a lingering impression of citrus oil and crushed rock. This is a structured, ageworthy Riesling that will reward patience: it is delicious now for its tension and clarity, but has the potential to evolve beautifully for 10–20 years or more, gaining additional depth, complexity and textural harmony.
Production
Frühlingsplätzchen is a celebrated VDP.Grosse Lage in the Nahe, marked by shallow red slate soils that radiate warmth and lend both spice and a distinct mineral firmness to the wines. The very old Riesling vines here dig deep into the rocky subsoil, naturally limiting yields and concentrating flavor. Schäfer-Fröhlich practices meticulous, largely manual vineyard work, including selective hand-harvesting in multiple passes to pick only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes. In the cellar, Tim Fröhlich is renowned for his mastery of spontaneous fermentation with ambient yeasts, allowing the terroir to speak clearly. Fermentation and élevage typically take place in a combination of stainless steel and large old wooden casks, with careful lees contact to build texture while preserving the wine’s incisive freshness and purity.
Food & Serving
This Grosses Gewächs is a superb partner for refined, flavorful dishes that can match its intensity and minerality. Think seafood in all its forms – especially oysters, scallops, turbot, sea bass or sushi and sashimi – as well as fine shellfish, ceviche, and citrus-accented crudo. It also shines with lightly spiced Asian cuisine, high-quality vegetable dishes, and white meats such as veal or poultry in delicate cream or citrus-based sauces. Serve at 9–11°C to emphasize its precision and aromatic lift. A brief decant of 30–60 minutes in its youth can help the wine unfurl its layered nose and integrate its racy structure; as it matures, gentle aeration in the glass will be sufficient.
