Description

The 2022 Schäfer-Fröhlich Felsenberg Riesling Grosses Gewächs is a benchmark dry Riesling from one of the Nahe’s most dramatic grand cru sites. Grown on ancient porphyry rock, this wine combines crystalline precision with depth and intensity, delivering a strikingly pure expression of terroir. As a VDP.GROSSE LAGE and Grosses Gewächs, it represents the top tier of German dry Riesling, with a track record for age‑worthiness and nuance.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Felsenberg GG 2022 shows a pale lemon to light straw hue with green reflections, hinting at its youthful energy and tension. The nose is finely etched and focused: cool citrus (lime zest, grapefruit), white peach and green apple are interwoven with wet stone, flint smoke and a distinct saline, almost sea-breeze character. Subtle herbal notes—think lemon balm and fennel frond—add further complexity. On the palate, this is tightly coiled yet already remarkably expressive. The attack is precise and linear, driven by vivid acidity that frames layers of citrus, stone fruit and crushed rock. A salty-mineral backbone runs from start to finish, giving the wine a mouthwatering, almost electric quality. Despite its finesse, there is real density and extract at the core, suggesting significant development ahead. The finish is long, dry and laser-clean, with lingering notes of grapefruit peel, smoke and salt. While already captivating in its youth, this Felsenberg GG is built for the cellar and should evolve beautifully over 10–15 years or more, gaining complexity, texture and tertiary nuances of honey, herbs and spice.

Production
The Felsenberg vineyard is one of the Nahe’s most revered steep sites, composed predominantly of weathered volcanic porphyry—a hard, magmatic rock that imparts intensity, tension and a distinctive smoky minerality to Riesling. The vines draw deeply into this poor, stony soil, naturally limiting yields and concentrating flavor. As a VDP.GROSSE LAGE, the site is cultivated with meticulous attention: selective hand-harvesting in multiple passes ensures only perfectly ripe, healthy Riesling grapes are brought to the cellar. In classic Schäfer-Fröhlich style, fermentation is driven largely by indigenous yeasts (“spontaneous fermentation”), allowing the character of the vineyard to shine. The wine is vinified as a dry Grosses Gewächs with strict yield control and gentle handling throughout, then matured on the fine lees to build texture, finesse and aromatic complexity without masking the purity of terroir.

Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic Riesling designed for the table. Its intensity and saline drive make it an outstanding partner for fine seafood—think turbot, halibut or sole, scallops, langoustines, or sushi and sashimi. It also performs brilliantly with delicately spiced Asian cuisine, citrus-accented dishes, and refined vegetable plates such as asparagus, artichokes or fennel. White poultry with light cream or citrus sauces and veal in delicate preparations are also excellent matches. Serve at 9–11°C (48–52°F) in a high-quality white wine or Riesling glass. Young bottles benefit from 30–60 minutes in a decanter to let the aromatics unfurl and the structure soften slightly; older, cellared bottles should be handled gently and decanted only briefly to remove sediment.

Producer
Schäfer-Fröhlich is one of Germany’s most admired modern Riesling estates, based in the Nahe and led by the highly regarded winemaker Tim Fröhlich. Over the past decades, the estate has risen to the absolute top tier of German producers, with critics and collectors worldwide seeking out its razor-sharp, terroir-driven wines. A member of the prestigious VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter), Schäfer-Fröhlich farms some of the finest classified sites in the region, including Felsenberg, and is celebrated for capturing the personality of each vineyard with clarity and precision. Tim Fröhlich, often referred to as the “master of spontaneous fermentation,” has garnered numerous accolades—among them top rankings in major German tastings such as the ‘Königsdisziplinen des German Rieslings’ and leading positions in Gault&Millau—cementing the estate’s reputation as a reference point for dry and off-dry Rieslings from the Nahe.
