Description

The 2022 Sara Pérez y René Barbier Partida Pedrer is a refined expression of modern Priorat, crafted by two of the region’s most respected winemaking figures. This red wine captures the rugged beauty of the slate-rich hillsides in a polished, beautifully detailed style. It’s a bottling that combines Mediterranean generosity with remarkable finesse, offering a vivid snapshot of a single site in a benchmark vintage. Partida Pedrer stands out for its focus on old-vine Garnacha (Grenache) grown on classic llicorella (slate) soils, delivering purity of fruit and a strong sense of place. The wine’s elegance and precision set it apart from heavier interpretations of Priorat, leaning into freshness, mineral structure and aromatic lift. Crafted by the daughter of Clos Mogador’s founder and her equally visionary partner, this cuvée reflects the new wave in Priorat: rooted in tradition but driven by terroir and balance rather than sheer power.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Partida Pedrer is a vibrant, medium to deep ruby with a translucent edge that hints at its finesse-driven style rather than brute concentration. The nose is perfumed and expressive, offering wild red berries, ripe cherry and raspberry, alongside pomegranate, blood orange zest, and notes of dried herbs, lavender and crushed rose petals. Underneath, the Priorat signature emerges as graphite, warm slate and a subtle smoky-mineral tone, with just a touch of sweet spice from careful maturation. On the palate, this wine is medium-bodied yet deeply flavored, with juicy red fruit, wild strawberry and black cherry framed by fine, chalky tannins and a bright, well-integrated acidity. There is a wonderful tension between fruit richness and rocky, mineral grip, giving the wine energy and precision. Hints of thyme, anise, and cocoa nibs unfold with air, and the finish is long, elegant and distinctly saline, echoing crushed stone and red fruit. While already approachable in its youth for its supple texture and purity, the 2022 has the structure to evolve gracefully over the next 6–10 years, gaining complexity and further aromatic nuance.

Production
Partida Pedrer is sourced from a specific parcel in Priorat, where old-vine Garnacha (often with a small proportion of Carinyena/Carignan) is rooted in steep, terraced hillsides of classic llicorella slate. This poor, stony soil, combined with intense Mediterranean sun and cooling evening breezes, naturally limits yields and concentrates flavor while preserving freshness. Grapes are typically harvested by hand, given the challenging slopes, with careful selection in both vineyard and cellar to retain only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit. In the winery, fermentation takes place with gentle extraction to favor aroma, texture and terroir expression over sheer power, often with a thoughtful use of whole clusters depending on the vintage conditions. Aging is usually carried out in well-seasoned oak or larger neutral vessels, allowing the wine to refine its tannins and gain complexity without being dominated by wood, resulting in a poised and transparent expression of this single site.

Food & Serving
The 2022 Partida Pedrer is a versatile food wine that shines with Mediterranean-inspired dishes and refined, savory cuisine. Pair it with grilled lamb chops with rosemary, roasted duck breast, rabbit or pork with herbes de Provence, or simply prepared game birds. It also works beautifully with charred vegetables, mushroom dishes, and aged hard cheeses such as Manchego or Comté, as well as dishes featuring smoky paprika or roasted peppers. Serve at 15–17°C (59–63°F) to highlight its aromatics and freshness. A short decant of 30–45 minutes helps the wine open up, softening the tannins and bringing out its floral and mineral dimensions, though more extended aeration (up to 2 hours) can be rewarding if you prefer a more expansive, evolved profile.

Producer
This wine is a collaboration between two of Priorat’s key contemporary figures: Sara Pérez and René Barbier (the younger), both deeply rooted in the region’s renaissance. Sara is best known for her work at Mas Martinet and the Venus La Universal project, while René is the son of Clos Mogador’s founder, one of the original pioneers who helped revive Priorat in the 1980s. Together, they represent the second generation of winemakers shaping the modern identity of the region, with a philosophy centered on terroir transparency, precision and balance. Their joint projects, including Partida Pedrer, are highly regarded for combining the intensity of Priorat with a more elegant, nuanced style, and they have become reference points for drinkers seeking wines that are as thoughtful and expressive as they are pleasurable to drink.
