Description

The 2022 Sara Pérez y René Barbier Gratallops Partida Bellvisos Blanc is a rare and characterful white from the steep schist slopes of Priorat, crafted by two of the region’s most respected names. This is not a simple Mediterranean white, but a textured, terroir-driven wine that captures the wild, stony landscape around the village of Gratallops in every glass. Limited in production and intensely site-specific, it’s a compelling choice for adventurous white wine lovers looking beyond the classic regions. Partida Bellvisos Blanc stands out for its old-vine fruit, organically farmed on dramatic, low-yielding terraces of llicorella (slate) that give the wine its distinctive mineral backbone. Sara Pérez and René Barbier have been central figures in the modern renaissance of Priorat, and this cuvée reflects their philosophy of minimal intervention, precision, and respect for place. While Priorat is historically known for powerful reds, wines like this underline the region’s growing reputation for complex, ageworthy whites.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Partida Bellvisos Blanc shows a luminous straw-gold color with greenish highlights, hinting at both freshness and concentration. As it opens, the nose is layered and expressive: ripe Mediterranean citrus (lemon peel, tangerine) mingles with white peach, fennel, wild herbs, and a delicate floral lift, all framed by a distinct smoky-slate minerality from the llicorella soils. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a beautifully balanced tension between ripe fruit and savory, saline notes. You’ll find flavors of stone fruit, preserved lemon, and pear, interwoven with hints of almond, anise, and a chalky, almost tactile minerality. The texture is creamy yet vibrant, supported by crisp, mouthwatering acidity and a long, slightly spicy finish. While remarkably enjoyable now for its energy and aromatic detail, this 2022 has the structure and acidity to evolve gracefully over the next 5–8 years, gaining even more complexity and nuance with bottle age.

Production
Partida Bellvisos Blanc is sourced from select parcels around Gratallops, where old vines are rooted in classic Priorat llicorella—dark, flaky slate that forces the roots deep and naturally limits yields, concentrating flavor and minerality. The vineyards are farmed organically, with a strong emphasis on biodiversity and manual work: hand-tended throughout the season and harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, often in small batches to preserve each plot’s character. In the cellar, the philosophy is minimal intervention—gentle pressing, indigenous yeast fermentation, and a careful élevage that may include a combination of stainless steel and neutral barrels to add texture without masking the terroir. Lees contact is typically extended to build mouthfeel and complexity, while keeping sulfur and manipulation to a minimum so the wine can express the purity of its origin.

Food & Serving
This Priorat white is a natural partner for richly flavored Mediterranean cuisine: think grilled or baked white fish with olive oil and herbs, octopus a la gallega, or roasted chicken with lemon, garlic, and thyme. It also pairs beautifully with seafood risotto, paella, shellfish, and semi-hard cheeses like Manchego or aged goat cheeses. Serve at around 10–12°C (50–54°F) to showcase both its aromatic detail and textural depth; too cold and some of the complexity will be muted. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes, or simply allowing the wine to open up in the glass, will help release its layered aromatics and highlight the striking mineral backbone.

Producer
The duo of Sara Pérez and René Barbier brings together two of Priorat’s most influential winemaking families, both instrumental in the region’s revival from the late 20th century onwards. Working primarily around Gratallops, they have focused on small, distinct parcels—“partidas”—to show the remarkable diversity of Priorat’s terroir. Their approach combines deep local knowledge and tradition with a sensitive, contemporary touch: organic farming, low yields, and precise, terroir-driven vinifications. Over the years, their wines have helped redefine expectations of Priorat, proving that the region can produce not only powerful reds but also refined, complex whites with real aging potential and international acclaim.
