Description
2022 Redheads Studio Coco Rotie is a vibrant Australian red that riffs on the classic Côte-Rôtie style, bringing together lush, ripe fruit with lifted florals and spice. Crafted in small batches by the maverick team at Redheads Studio, it offers serious quality wrapped in an approachable, modern style. This McLaren Vale red has quickly become a favorite for those who love Syrah/Shiraz with a touch of elegance and aromatic lift.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Coco Rotie shows a deep, vivid ruby-purple hue with a youthful brightness at the rim, hinting at its energy and freshness. The nose is generous and expressive, with notes of ripe blackberry, dark cherry, and plum layered over violets, cracked black pepper, and a subtle hint of smoked meat. Underneath, you’ll find delicate tones of vanilla, cocoa, and a light floral perfume that soften the more savory elements.
On the palate, this wine is medium to full-bodied with a ripe, velvety texture. Dark berry and black cherry fruits lead the way, supported by pepper spice, a touch of roasted coffee, and a gentle herbal edge. The tannins are fine and well-integrated, giving structure without harshness, while fresh acidity keeps everything lively and food-friendly. The finish is long and smooth, with lingering notes of violet, dark chocolate, and spice. Enjoy it now for its vibrancy, or cellar for 3–7 years to gain more complexity and a silkier mouthfeel.
Production
Sourced from select vineyard parcels in South Australia’s McLaren Vale, Coco Rotie benefits from a Mediterranean climate moderated by cooling coastal breezes, which help grapes retain freshness while achieving full ripeness. The region’s varied soils—ranging from red-brown loams to clay over limestone—contribute both depth of flavor and natural structure. Grapes are typically picked in the cool of the early morning to preserve aromatics and fruit purity, then gently crushed and fermented in small batches. A portion of whole berries and careful temperature control during fermentation help enhance bright fruit and floral notes. After fermentation, the wine is matured in a mix of predominantly older oak barrels to add subtle spice and texture without overwhelming the vibrant character of the fruit.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile red that shines alongside grilled lamb chops, pepper-crusted steak, or slow-cooked beef short ribs. It also works beautifully with Mediterranean-inspired dishes like roasted vegetables with herbs, chargrilled sausages, or hearty mushroom pastas, and can stand up nicely to hard cheeses and aged Gouda. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase both its aromatics and structure. A brief decant of 30–45 minutes is recommended for young bottles to allow the spice and floral notes to fully open.
Producer
Redheads Studio began as a small, renegade winemaking project in South Australia, built around a simple idea: give talented winemakers access to top-quality fruit and the freedom to experiment. Over time, it has evolved into one of the most characterful, story-driven producers in the region, known for bold labels, inventive blends, and a focus on small-batch craftsmanship. Based in a key heartland of Australian red wine, Redheads has earned a loyal following for wines that balance serious quality with an irreverent, artisan spirit. Coco Rotie is one of the estate’s standout reds, showcasing their knack for taking classic European inspiration and reimagining it with distinctly Australian fruit and flair.
