In the glass, the 2022 Royal St. Robert Cuvée shows a luminous, medium ruby hue with a delicate translucence that hints at its finesse. The nose is vibrant and alluring, with lifted aromas of wild red cherries, pomegranate, and crushed raspberry layered over notes of rose petals, orange zest, damp earth, and subtle spice—think white pepper, clove, and a gentle hint of forest floor. Raen farms their Sonoma Coast sites with an emphasis on organic, low-intervention practices, drawing from high-elevation, maritime-influenced vineyards that benefit from cool Pacific breezes and lingering coastal fog. These conditions slow ripening, concentrating flavor while preserving acidity and aromatic lift, and the diverse marine and sandstone soils contribute a distinct mineral edge. Grapes are typically hand-harvested in small lots at optimal ripeness, sorted meticulously, and often fermented with a significant portion of whole clusters using native yeasts to build aromatic complexity and structure. The wine is then aged in mostly neutral French oak barrels to maintain freshness and purity of fruit, allowing the terroir and the delicacy of Pinot Noir to remain at the forefront.
