Description
2022 Quinta do Vale Meão Monte Meão Vinha da Cantinha is a rare, single-vineyard red that showcases the Douro’s wilder, more Atlantic-spirited side. Crafted entirely from the Baga grape – far more commonly associated with Bairrada – it offers a strikingly refined, low-alcohol profile (12%) without sacrificing depth or character. This is one of the small-production Monte Meão wines, sourced from a tiny old vineyard on schist, giving a distinctive, terroir-driven expression that stands apart from the estate’s flagship blends.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Monte Meão Vinha da Cantinha shows a deep, dark red colour with a vibrant rim, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is complex and layered: dark berries and black cherries mingle with notes of violet, dark chocolate, and subtle licorice, all unfolding gradually rather than competing with each other. Hints of schistous minerality and gentle spice add further nuance as the wine opens.
On the palate, the wine is remarkably elegant and poised for a Baga, with fine-grained tannins and a cool, linear profile. The dark fruit core is lifted by lively acidity, giving great definition and length, while the 16 months in used French oak are beautifully integrated, adding texture rather than overt oak flavor. The finish is very long, with lingering notes of cocoa, floral spice, and a stony, savoury edge. Baga is naturally tannic and structured, so this 2022 has excellent aging potential: it will benefit from several years in bottle, evolving over 8–15 years into a more silky, complex and tertiary-driven wine.
Production
The Vinha da Cantinha parcel is a small, old Baga vineyard set on a schist plateau directly facing the Quinta do Vale Meão winery in the eastern Douro, close to the Spanish border. The schist soils, warm continental climate and marked diurnal shifts combine to give grapes with thick skins, firm structure and naturally high acidity. Bunches are carefully harvested by hand to preserve fruit integrity and brought to the cellar for a traditional, gently extractive vinification. After a maceration of around 12 days in open vats, the wine completes fermentation and is then aged for 16 months in used French oak, allowing the Baga’s character and the minerality of the site to take center stage without heavy oak influence.
Food & Serving
This structured yet elegant Baga pairs beautifully with savoury, flavourful dishes: think roast lamb with herbs, braised beef or veal, game birds, wild mushroom risotto, or chargrilled vegetables and seasoned, semi-hard cheeses. Its freshness and tannic backbone also make it a fine match for rich pork dishes or slow-cooked casseroles. Serve at 16–18°C to show both aromatics and structure at their best. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is strongly recommended to soften the naturally firm Baga tannins and allow the wine’s full aromatic complexity to emerge.
Producer
Quinta do Vale Meão is one of Portugal’s most illustrious estates, located in the eastern Douro and famously known as the birthplace of Barca Velha, the country’s most iconic Douro red. The property was acquired in 1877 by the legendary Dona Antónia Ferreira and remains in the family, now owned by her great-great-grandson Francisco Javier de Olazabal. After decades of supplying grapes for Port, Francisco Javier and his son, winemaker Xito (Francisco) Olazabal, began bottling estate wines in 1998; their debut, Meão 1999, was immediately hailed as the best Portuguese wine of its year. Today, Quinta do Vale Meão is widely regarded as one of Portugal’s top quintas and is a member of the renowned “Douro Boys,” a group credited with redefining the region’s reputation for world-class dry wines. The Monte Meão range, including Vinha da Cantinha, represents some of their most distinctive, small-lot expressions of Douro terroir.
