Description
The 2022 Philippe le Hardi Santenay Mercurey Les Puillets 1er Cru brings together the elegance of Santenay with the depth and finesse expected from a premier cru Burgundy. Produced by Château de Santenay, it reflects the region’s long tradition of crafting refined Pinot Noir with both charm and structure.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Burgundy typically shows a bright ruby color with a lively, youthful sheen. The nose is expected to offer fragrant red cherry, raspberry, violet, and subtle earthy spice notes, with a gentle touch of oak if used.
On the palate, it should be supple and well-balanced, with fresh red berry fruit, fine tannins, and a polished, mineral-driven finish. 2022 wines from Burgundy are often approachable early, but this premier cru should also have the structure to develop nicely over the next 5–8 years, gaining complexity and deeper savory nuances.
Production
Santenay and the surrounding Burgundy vineyards are known for limestone-rich soils that lend freshness, precision, and a distinct mineral edge to the wines. The fruit for this premier cru is typically harvested by hand to preserve quality and then vinified with care to emphasize purity of fruit and the transparent character of Pinot Noir. Fermentation and aging are generally carried out in oak barrels to add texture and subtle complexity without masking the vineyard expression.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roast chicken, duck breast, veal, mushroom dishes, and classic Burgundian cuisine such as coq au vin. It is best served slightly cool, around 15–17°C, and decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended if the wine is enjoyed young.
Producer
Château de Santenay is a respected Burgundy estate with deep roots in the Côte de Beaune and a strong reputation for producing site-expressive wines. The domaine is associated with the Philippe le Hardi label, a name that pays tribute to the historic Duke of Burgundy and the region’s winemaking heritage. Over time, the producer has become known for elegant, terroir-driven wines that highlight the character of Burgundy’s premier cru sites.
