Description

The 2022 Paganos La Nieta Magnum is a commanding yet remarkably refined expression of modern Rioja Alavesa, crafted by the renowned Eguren family. Sourced from a tiny 1.75-hectare single vineyard planted in 1975, this is the flagship wine of Viñedos de Páganos and one of the most coveted reds in Spain. Bottled in magnum format, it offers an even slower, more graceful evolution in the cellar and at the table, making it a standout choice for collectors and special occasions.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Nieta 2022 shows a deep, vibrant ruby to almost opaque purple core, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is polished and layered rather than ostentatious: ripe blackberries, dark cherries and plums are interwoven with violet, crushed stone, subtle toast, cocoa and sweet spice from fine French oak. With air, more nuance emerges—graphite, black tea, a touch of licorice and a delicate balsamic note. On the palate, the wine is powerful yet impeccably balanced, with a medium to full body and a strikingly mineral backbone that reflects its limestone-rich soils. The fruit is pure and focused—black and red berries, black cherry and a touch of damson—framed by firm, ultra-fine tannins and fresh, well-integrated acidity. The oak is seamlessly folded into the texture, adding structure, smoke and a gentle creaminess without dominating. The finish is long, savoury and saline, with lingering notes of spice, dark fruit and stone. While already impressive with substantial food, this 2022 La Nieta Magnum is built for aging; in this larger format it should evolve beautifully over 12–20 years, gaining added complexity and silkiness.

Production
La Nieta hails from a single, 1.75-hectare vineyard in Páganos, near Laguardia in Rioja Alavesa, perched at around 525 metres above sea level. Here, old vines (planted in 1975) sink their roots into very calcareous clay soils, giving naturally low yields and a marked mineral character. The climate, influenced by both Atlantic and continental elements, provides cool nights that preserve acidity and aromatic finesse. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with meticulous selection in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only the finest fruit is used. Fermentation takes place in four 1,000-litre oak vats, allowing precise control over extraction and temperature, followed by aging in new French oak barriques for 16 months. This combination of exceptional terroir, tiny production and artisanal vinification results in a wine of depth, precision and remarkable elegance.

Food & Serving
This is a serious, structured Rioja that shines alongside equally serious dishes. Think dry-aged ribeye or entrecôte, grilled or pan-seared beef with rich reductions, slow-braised lamb shanks, venison, or roast suckling pig with earthy sides such as mushrooms, roasted root vegetables or truffled potato purée. It can also handle aged hard cheeses like Manchego viejo or Comté. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C. Decant generously—at least 1–2 hours for current drinking—to allow the wine to unfurl its full aromatic and textural complexity, especially from magnum. In top vintages like 2022, extended aeration will only enhance the sense of harmony and finesse.

Producer
Viñedos de Páganos is part of the illustrious Eguren family portfolio, whose winemaking roots in Rioja stretch back to 1870. Over generations, the Egurens have become one of Spain’s leading fine-wine dynasties, behind acclaimed estates such as Sierra Cantabria, San Vicente and the famous Numanthia-Termes project (later acquired by LVMH). Viñedos de Páganos represents their deep commitment to terroir-driven, estate-grown Rioja from the high-quality limestone slopes of Rioja Alavesa. La Nieta—named in honor of the family’s granddaughter—is their flagship wine and one of the country’s most highly regarded single-vineyard reds, consistently praised by international critics and frequently singled out as a star of the region. With extremely limited production and a track record of excellence, Paganos stands at the forefront of modern, world-class Rioja.
