Description

2022 Nin-Ortiz Planetes La Rodeda is a striking biodynamic red from the steep, slate-laced hillsides of Priorat, crafted by the highly respected duo Ester Nin and Carles Ortiz. This cuvée brings together Garnacha, Garnacha Peluda and Cariñena from their Les Planetes estate to deliver a wine that channels Priorat’s power with an almost Burgundian sense of finesse. Awarded 96/100 points by Robert Parker, it has quickly become one of the reference wines for those seeking a more terroir-transparent, elegant expression of the region.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Planetes La Rodeda shows a deep, vivid burgundian red core with a bright, lively rim, hinting at both intensity and freshness. The nose begins slightly reductive and tightly wound, then opens beautifully with a bit of air to reveal layers of dark red and black stone fruits, crushed rock, wild herbs and a subtle peppery lift. Underneath, there’s a fine thread of iron-like minerality from the llicorella and ferral-rich soils, with discreet floral and spicy notes adding further complexity. On the palate, the wine is precise and energetic rather than heavy, with a medium to full body carried by a vibrant, vinous core. Juicy red and black cherries, plum skin and wild berries glide across the tongue, framed by a savory, stony backbone and that distinct Priorat smokiness in a very refined register. The tannins are polished but firm enough to give structure, and the acidity keeps everything fresh and elongated, leading to a long, lively finish that balances elegance, power and a strong sense of place. While already compelling with some air, this vintage has the structure and balance to age gracefully for 8–12 years, gaining further complexity and harmony in bottle.

Production
The grapes for Planetes La Rodeda come from the Les Planetes estate in Porrera, a four-hectare site planted in 2008 on classic Priorat llicorella (slate) soils, here particularly rich in iron oxide—known locally as ferral—which are harder and more demanding than typical slate and give a marked mineral and ferrous character to the wines. The vineyards, farmed biodynamically by Ester and Carles with the help of their mules Negret and Max, include both terraces and old-style ‘costers’ slopes planted mainly to Garnacha, Garnacha Peluda and Cariñena. Cariñena was harvested between 13–15 September and Garnacha between 26–28 September, all by hand. About 40% of the bunches were fermented as whole clusters, with the remainder destemmed but left as whole berries, and the must fermented with indigenous yeasts in large 3,200 L oak vats for around 15 days. After pressing, the wine was returned to the vats to finish fermentation off the skins, and then racked into a single 3,000 L oak foudre for a long, gentle élevage of about 20 months, allowing the terroir to speak clearly without overt oak influence.

Food & Serving
This refined Priorat is a natural partner for savory, characterful dishes such as roasted lamb with Provençal herbs, slow-braised beef cheeks, Iberico pork, or duck with cherries and thyme. It also pairs beautifully with dishes that highlight umami and earthiness—wild mushroom ragù, grilled aubergine, or aged hard cheeses like Manchego or Comté. Serve at 15–17°C to preserve its freshness and aromatic detail. Decanting for 1–2 hours is highly recommended, especially in its youth, to let the initial reductive notes blow off and allow the full spectrum of fruit, spice and mineral complexity to unfold.

Producer
Nin-Ortiz is one of the most exciting names in contemporary Priorat, founded by oenologist and biologist Ester Nin and winegrower Carles Ortiz, who farm small, steep parcels around Porrera, Torroja and Gratallops. Ester, originally from the higher Penedès zone of El Pla de Manlleu, is renowned for her work at the iconic Clos Erasmus in Gratallops and for vinifying the early vintages of NUN, Enric Soler’s benchmark white from Penedès. From the outset, she has been unwavering in her commitment to biodynamics and low-intervention, terroir-driven winemaking. Together with Carles, who tends the vineyards traditionally with their mules, Nin-Ortiz has helped define a new, more refined face of Priorat—one that marries the region’s concentration and intensity with freshness, precision and a Burgundian sensitivity to site. Their wines, including Planetes, are consistently highly rated and sought after, cementing the estate’s reputation as a leading voice in the appellation.
