Description

The 2022 Montaribaldi Sori Barbaresco is a refined expression of Nebbiolo from one of Italy’s most revered terroirs. Crafted in the hills of Barbaresco, this wine marries classic structure with the generosity and charm of a young vintage. It’s a Barbaresco that offers both immediate pleasure and the promise of graceful evolution in the cellar. What sets this wine apart is its balance of precision and approachability: it shows the hallmark Barbaresco tannins and aromatic lift, yet with a supple, modern polish. Sourced from carefully tended hillside vineyards, the “Sori” designation traditionally refers to a sunny, well-exposed site—ideal for bringing Nebbiolo to full ripeness. Barbaresco itself has been a benchmark for age-worthy Italian reds since it gained DOCG status in the early 1980s, and Montaribaldi’s interpretation stays true to that legacy while highlighting the character of the 2022 harvest.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Montaribaldi Sori Barbaresco shows a luminous garnet core with ruby highlights and the characteristic pale rim that signals classic Nebbiolo. Swirl the wine and you’ll find a fragrant bouquet of crushed red cherries, wild strawberries, and dried rose petals, layered with hints of violet, orange peel, and subtle notes of anise, cedar, and sweet tobacco. On the palate, this Barbaresco is precise and linear, with fine-grained tannins that frame rather than dominate the fruit. Flavors of sour cherry, redcurrant, and pomegranate are woven with savory undertones of dried herbs, tea leaf, and a gentle earthiness, finishing with a long, mineral-tinged aftertaste. The 2022 vintage offers good concentration without heaviness, making the wine enjoyable in its youth while still built for the long term. Expect a solid aging window of 8–15 years from vintage, during which the tannins will soften and the bouquet will gain complexity, bringing out deeper notes of leather, truffle, and dried flowers.

Production
The grapes for Montaribaldi’s Sori Barbaresco come from steep, well-exposed hillside parcels in the Barbaresco area of Piemonte, where calcareous clay and marl soils give Nebbiolo its perfume, structure, and distinctive mineral edge. The region’s continental climate—marked by warm days, cool nights, and frequent autumn fog—helps extend the ripening season and develop aromatic complexity. Harvest is typically carried out by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy clusters are brought to the cellar. Vinification follows traditional Barbaresco methods: a careful destemming and gentle pressing, followed by fermentation in temperature-controlled vessels with regular pump-overs to extract color, tannin, and flavor from the skins. After fermentation, the wine is aged in oak (often large Slavonian botti and/or older barrels) to soften the tannins and integrate the aromas, while preserving Nebbiolo’s purity and the clear expression of its terroir.

Food & Serving
This Barbaresco is an excellent partner for refined, flavorful dishes such as truffle pasta, mushroom risotto, braised veal shank (ossobuco), roasted lamb, or game birds like guinea fowl and duck. It also shines alongside aged cheeses such as Parmigiano-Reggiano, Pecorino, or an aged Taleggio. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Nebbiolo glasses to highlight the wine’s aromatic complexity. For a young vintage like 2022, decanting for 1–2 hours before serving will help the tannins relax and the bouquet to fully open; as the wine matures, a shorter aeration will usually be sufficient.

Producer
Montaribaldi is a family-run estate based in the Langhe hills of Piemonte, a region that ranks among Italy’s most important for fine wine. Founded with a focus on authenticity and respect for local tradition, the winery has built its reputation on crafting expressive, terroir-driven wines from classic Piedmontese varieties, with Nebbiolo for Barbaresco and Barolo at the core of its identity. Montaribaldi combines meticulous vineyard work with thoughtful cellar practices, aiming to capture the character of each site and vintage rather than impose a heavy-handed style. Over the years, the estate has earned a loyal following for offering wines that deliver both regional typicity and exceptional value, contributing to Barbaresco’s standing as one of the great red wines of Italy.
