Description
The 2022 Michel Niellon Chassagne-Montrachet Les Champgains 1er Cru is a quietly luxurious expression of white Burgundy, coming from one of the most respected domaines in Chassagne. This Premier Cru marries refined power with a silken texture, showing why Les Champgains is so prized among Chardonnay lovers. A limited-production wine from old family holdings, it bridges generations of meticulous winemaking that stretches back to the 19th century.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this wine shows a luminous pale gold hue in its youth, deepening toward a richer golden color with a few years of bottle age. The nose opens with elegant floral notes of acacia blossom, intertwined with honeyed nuances, ripe stone fruits, and a hint of citrus zest. Subtle oak tones of toasted brioche and vanilla are beautifully integrated rather than dominant.
On the palate, the texture is textbook Niellon: silky, almost oil-like in its glide, yet carried by a precise mineral backbone. Generous flavors of ripe white peach, pear and yellow plum are layered with acacia honey, almond cream, and a distinct note of crushed stones and fresh herbs on the long, nuanced finish. The style is more restrained and elegant than flamboyant, offering depth and richness without heaviness. While it is approachable relatively young, the wine will really blossom over 4–5 years in the cellar, gaining complexity, tertiary honeyed and nutty notes, and a deeper, more golden hue.
Production
Les Champgains is one of the celebrated Premier Cru climats of Chassagne-Montrachet, with well-exposed slopes and limestone-rich soils that impart tension, minerality, and aromatic finesse to Chardonnay. Domaine Michel Niellon farms a small, highly prized parcel here at elevations between roughly 200 and 400 meters, benefiting from good drainage and a temperate Burgundian climate. The Chardonnay grapes are hand-harvested and rigorously sorted to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit makes it to the press. Fermentation is carried out using the indigenous yeasts naturally present on the grape skins, preserving the character of the terroir. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, with a modest proportion (around 15–30%) of new oak, where it undergoes malolactic conversion and extended aging sur lie. This careful élevage builds the wine’s creamy texture and complexity while keeping the oak influence finely balanced.
Food & Serving
This Chassagne-Montrachet Les Champgains 1er Cru is an outstanding partner for refined dishes such as butter-poached lobster, scallops in a light cream or beurre blanc sauce, roasted turbot or sole, and classic Burgundian poultry like poulet de Bresse with morels. It also shines with richer poultry terrines, veal in a delicate cream sauce, and aged semi-hard cheeses such as Comté or Gruyère. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight both its freshness and texture. In its youth, a short decant of 20–30 minutes can help the wine open up aromatically; as it gains a few years of age, simply allowing it to breathe in the glass is often sufficient.
Producer
Domaine Michel Niellon is a benchmark estate in Chassagne-Montrachet, with family roots in viticulture dating back to the 19th century when Léon Niellon first founded the family’s holdings. Michel Niellon took over from his father Marcel in the 1960s and steadily built the domaine’s reputation for impeccably crafted Chardonnay and Pinot Noir across around six to seven and a half hectares of prime vineyards, chiefly in Chassagne-Montrachet. Known for meticulous work in the vines, hand-harvesting, and a judicious use of French oak, the domaine has become particularly renowned for its great white crus, including the iconic Bâtard-Montrachet and a superb range of Premier Crus like Les Champgains. Today, wines from Domaine Michel Niellon are considered reference points for the appellation, sought after worldwide for their combination of purity, concentration, and age-worthy elegance.
