Description
2022 Mauro Vendimia Seleccionada (VS) is a bold, characterful Spanish red that showcases the depth and elegance for which Mauro has become renowned. Sourced from carefully selected plots in and around Ribera del Duero, this cuvée is crafted in limited quantities from their best-performing fruit in the vintage. It’s a modern expression of Castilian Tempranillo, balancing generous ripeness with fine structure and freshness.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Mauro VS shows a deep, opaque cherry-red colour with violet highlights that hint at its youth and intensity. The nose is expressive and layered, opening with ripe blackberries, dark cherries and plums, supported by notes of violet, sweet spice, cocoa and a touch of toasted oak and graphite.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and concentrated yet polished, with dark fruit at the core – blackcurrant, black cherry and ripe plum – framed by fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity. Subtle hints of vanilla, clove, licorice and mineral undertones add complexity and length. The finish is long, savoury and slightly spicy, suggesting excellent aging potential; while already enjoyable in its youth with some air, the wine should evolve beautifully over the next 8–12 years, gaining complexity and softer texture.
Production
Mauro sources fruit from meticulously tended vineyards in Castilla y León, influenced by the continental climate that defines the broader Ribera del Duero area: hot, dry summers, cold winters and wide diurnal temperature swings that help preserve acidity and aromatic precision. Old vines rooted in a mix of gravel, sandy loam and limestone-clay soils contribute both intensity and structure. Grapes are typically harvested by hand in small crates at optimum ripeness to ensure careful selection in the vineyard and at the winery. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks to preserve fruit purity, followed by aging in quality French (and sometimes a portion of American) oak barrels. The Vendimia Seleccionada bottling is based on the finest lots of the vintage, blended and matured to achieve a harmonious balance of power, elegance and aging capacity.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile yet decidedly gastronomic red, ideal with richly flavoured dishes. Think grilled or roasted lamb, charred ribeye steak, Iberico pork, braised short ribs, game birds, or hearty stews with mushrooms and root vegetables. It also works beautifully with aged Manchego, hard sheep’s cheeses and charcuterie. Serve at 16–18°C; if enjoying it young, decant for 1–2 hours to allow the aromas to unfurl and the tannins to soften. In a larger Bordeaux-style glass, the wine will show its full aromatic range and refined structure.
Producer
Bodegas Mauro, founded by the renowned winemaker Mariano García after his long tenure at Vega Sicilia, has become one of the reference estates in Castilla y León. Located just outside the official Ribera del Duero appellation boundaries, Mauro has used its Vino de la Tierra status to craft expressive, terroir-driven reds with a distinct, modern personality. Over the decades, the winery has gained a stellar reputation for consistency, depth and ageworthiness, helping to redefine the image of premium Spanish red wine on the international stage. Mauro’s top cuvées, including Vendimia Seleccionada, are regularly praised by critics and collectors alike for their combination of Mediterranean richness, Atlantic freshness and timeless elegance.
