Description
The 2022 Mas Martinet Els Escurçons BIO is a striking, single-vineyard red from the dramatic hillsides of Priorat, capturing the region’s power in a more lifted, delicate style. Crafted from organically farmed Garnacha at high altitude, it showcases purity of fruit, tension, and a strong sense of place. As one of Mas Martinet’s most characterful, site-specific wines, Els Escurçons has become a modern benchmark for the new, terroir-driven face of Priorat.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Els Escurçons BIO shows a luminous, medium to deep ruby color with a touch of violet at the rim, signaling both youth and freshness. The nose is refined rather than heavy, with vibrant aromas of wild red berries, cherry, and pomegranate layered over floral notes of rose and violet, along with hints of Mediterranean herbs, anise, subtle blood orange, and a delicate mineral undercurrent.
On the palate, this wine is elegant yet structured, with a juicy core of red fruit framed by fine-grained tannins and lively acidity. Expect flavors of ripe cherry, raspberry, and red plum, evolving into notes of licorice, dried thyme, crushed stone, and a gentle, savory spice as it opens in the glass. The finish is long, precise, and saline, emphasizing freshness rather than sheer weight. While already approachable in its youth with some aeration, the 2022 vintage has the balance and concentration to develop beautifully over 10–15 years, gaining complexity, silkier texture, and more pronounced tertiary nuances.
Production
Els Escurçons is sourced from a high-altitude single vineyard in the Priorat appellation, where Garnacha vines grow on poor, rocky soils that mix the region’s famous slate with limestone and clay. This elevated site, with its cooler nights and intense sun, naturally limits yields and helps preserve acidity and aromatic lift. The grapes are organically farmed (BIO), hand-harvested in small boxes, and carefully sorted to ensure only the best clusters are used. Fermentation is typically carried out with indigenous yeasts to respect the character of the vineyard, often in concrete or neutral vessels that avoid masking the fruit with excessive oak. Aging takes place in large, used barrels or similarly gentle containers, allowing the wine to gain texture and complexity while maintaining the purity, finesse, and mineral definition that define Els Escurçons.
Food & Serving
The 2022 Els Escurçons BIO pairs beautifully with refined yet flavorful dishes that respect its balance of delicacy and structure. Think herb-crusted lamb chops, roasted duck breast with cherries, grilled Iberico pork, or game birds with wild mushrooms. It also works well with charcuterie, aged Manchego or other firm sheep’s milk cheeses, and dishes featuring roasted Mediterranean vegetables and aromatic herbs. Serve at around 15–17°C (59–63°F) for optimal expression. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth is recommended to let the aromatics unfurl and the tannins soften, though gentle pouring into large Burgundy-style glasses will also help the wine open up beautifully at the table.
