Description
The 2022 Mas Martinet Clos Martinet BIO Magnum is a powerful yet finely sculpted red from one of Priorat’s true benchmark estates. Bottled in magnum for extended aging and celebratory occasions, it captures the wild beauty of Priorat’s dramatic hillsides in a polished, terroir-driven style. Certified organic, this cuvée is a modern classic that marries Mediterranean ripeness with remarkable freshness and finesse. Clos Martinet was one of the original “clos” wines that helped spearhead Priorat’s renaissance in the late 20th century, and it remains a reference point for the region today. The 2022 vintage continues this legacy, showcasing the depth and complexity possible from old vines rooted in Priorat’s iconic llicorella slate soils.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Clos Martinet BIO presents a deep, vibrant ruby color with violet reflections, enhanced in magnum by a sense of youthful density and luminosity. The nose is intense and layered: ripe black cherries, plum and blackberry are lifted by notes of Mediterranean herbs, dried thyme and rosemary, along with hints of licorice, graphite, crushed slate and a subtle floral edge of violets.
On the palate, this wine is full-bodied but beautifully balanced, with a core of dark, juicy fruit framed by fine, chalky tannins and a spine of refreshing acidity. Flavors of black cherry, mulberry and damson are interwoven with cocoa, sweet spice, black olive tapenade and a distinct mineral salinity that speaks clearly of Priorat’s slate soils. The finish is long, complex and persistent, with savory and spicy nuances that continue to unfold in the glass. In magnum format, the 2022 Clos Martinet BIO has excellent aging potential; while already approachable with aeration in its youth, it will gain in complexity and harmony over 10–15 years, and potentially longer under proper cellaring conditions.
Production
Mas Martinet’s Clos Martinet originates from terraced and sloping vineyards in the heart of Priorat, rooted in the region’s signature llicorella—dark, flaky slate that forces vines to dig deep for water and nutrients, yielding low yields and remarkable concentration. The blend typically brings together Garnacha and Cariñena, complemented by small amounts of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, all farmed organically (BIO) with strong emphasis on biodiversity and soil health. Harvest is carried out by hand, parcel by parcel, with rigorous selection in the vineyard and again in the cellar to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes are used. Fermentations are carried out with close attention to preserving freshness and aromatic detail, often using a mix of stainless steel, concrete and large wooden vats, with gentle extraction to avoid over-extraction of tannin. The wine is then aged in a thoughtful combination of barrels and larger wooden vessels to integrate structure and add complexity without masking the pure expression of fruit and terroir, before being bottled in magnum to encourage a slower, more graceful evolution.
Food & Serving
The 2022 Clos Martinet BIO Magnum is a superb partner for richly flavored, Mediterranean-influenced cuisine. Think slow-braised lamb shanks with rosemary, grilled ribeye with charred vegetables, duck breast with black cherry or plum sauce, or hearty stews featuring chorizo, game or wild mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Manchego, Comté or Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to highlight both its aromatic complexity and freshness. Given its youth and concentration, decanting is highly recommended: 1–2 hours in a broad-based decanter will help the wine open up, soften the tannins and fully reveal its layers, especially from magnum.
Producer
Mas Martinet was founded in 1989 by José Luis Pérez, one of the pioneering figures behind Priorat’s modern revival, and is now led by his daughter, winemaker Sara Pérez, who has further elevated the estate’s reputation. Situated in the heart of Priorat, Mas Martinet was among the small group of visionary producers who redefined the region in the late 20th century, proving that its rugged, slate-rich hillsides could yield world-class, age-worthy wines. Over the years, the winery has become a standard-bearer for terroir-driven, meticulously farmed reds, with a strong commitment to organic and increasingly biodynamic practices. Their wines, and Clos Martinet in particular, are frequently cited as reference points for Priorat in top wine publications and by sommeliers around the world, cementing Mas Martinet’s status as one of the most influential and respected producers in the region.
