Description
The 2022 Maison Evenstad Beaune Premier Cru Les Epenotes is a refined expression of Pinot Noir from one of Beaune’s most admired Premier Cru vineyards. Crafted by Maison Evenstad with the same precision and ambition that have made their Oregon wines celebrated worldwide, this cuvée offers both immediacy of pleasure and serious aging potential. Les Epenotes has long been prized for its combination of silken texture and aromatic complexity, and in 2022 it delivers a particularly vibrant, finely etched profile.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Beaune Premier Cru shows a luminous, medium ruby hue with youthful purple reflections at the rim, signalling both freshness and concentration. The nose opens with pure red berry notes—wild strawberry, red cherry and cranberry—layered with rose petals, violets, and a hint of black tea. With air, more savoury nuances emerge: dried herbs, forest floor, subtle spice, and a delicate touch of fine French oak.
On the palate, the wine is supple yet structured, with a silky attack that quickly reveals a fine-boned tannic frame. Juicy red fruits mingle with hints of ripe raspberry and blood orange, supported by a lively, well-integrated acidity that keeps everything fresh and precise. Subtle notes of clove, cocoa nib and crushed stone add depth on the long, elegant finish. While already accessible in its youth, the balance of fruit, acidity and tannin suggests a graceful evolution over 8–12 years from vintage, gaining more earth, truffle and sous-bois complexity with time.
Production
Les Epenotes is a prized Premier Cru climat situated on the southern side of Beaune, near the border with Pommard, where deep, well-drained clay-limestone soils and a gentle slope provide an ideal setting for nuanced, ageworthy Pinot Noir. Maison Evenstad works with careful, often manual viticulture to maintain low yields and optimal ripeness, ensuring healthy, concentrated fruit at harvest. Grapes are typically hand-picked at optimal maturity, carefully sorted, and then vinified in small lots: a gentle, temperature-controlled fermentation with a judicious use of whole clusters (depending on vintage conditions) to enhance aromatic complexity and structure. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels—often with a tasteful proportion of new oak—to refine the tannins and add subtle spice, while preserving the purity and finesse that define Burgundy.
Food & Serving
This Beaune Premier Cru is wonderfully versatile at the table, pairing beautifully with dishes that highlight its finesse and aromatic complexity. Think roast duck with cherries, herb-crusted lamb, guinea fowl, or veal with morel cream sauce; it also shines alongside mushroom risotto, truffle pasta, or roasted root vegetables and mild, earthy cheeses such as Époisses, Comté or Tomme. Serve at 14–16°C (57–61°F) for optimal expression of aroma and texture. In its youth, a gentle decant of 30–45 minutes helps the wine open up; as it gains bottle age, simply pouring into large Burgundy stems and allowing it to evolve in the glass will be more than sufficient.
Producer
Maison Evenstad is the Burgundy outpost of the Evenstad family, founders of the acclaimed Domaine Serene in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Building on decades of experience crafting top-tier Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the New World, the family turned to Burgundy—Pinot Noir’s spiritual homeland—to steward historic vineyards and explore the region’s most distinguished climats. From their base in the Côte d’Or, they focus on small-lot, terroir-driven wines that respect traditional Burgundian craftsmanship while benefitting from a meticulous, quality-first philosophy. Today, Maison Evenstad is recognised as an exciting bridge between New World precision and Old World heritage, contributing to the continued prestige of Burgundy on the global stage.
