Description
The 2022 Laimburg Alto Adige Gewürztraminer comes from the high-altitude Moarhof vineyard above Meran/Freiberg at 500 meters, where cool Alpine breezes meet intense mountain sunshine. This combination crafts a Gewürztraminer that is more refined, fresh, and finely etched than many lowland expressions of the grape. Extended aging on the lees adds texture and depth, making this a particularly serious and gastronomic white from one of Alto Adige’s most respected estates.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Gewürztraminer shows a bright, light yellow hue with luminous golden reflections, hinting at both freshness and richness. The nose is delicately expressive rather than overpowering, with aromas of fresh rose petals, lychee, and exotic fruits such as mango and passion fruit, layered with gentle spicy nuances.
On the palate, the wine is powerful yet poised, with a generous, almost creamy mid-palate supported by a lively Alpine acidity. The interplay between ripe, tropical fruit and floral notes is finely balanced by a clean, precise line of freshness. The altitude of Alto Adige lends an elegance and lift that keeps the wine from feeling heavy, and the finish is long, aromatic, and persistent. Thanks to its structure and acidity, this 2022 has very good aging potential for Gewürztraminer: it will drink beautifully now but can continue to develop additional honeyed and spicy complexity over the next 3–5 years, possibly longer in ideal cellaring conditions.
Production
The Moarhof vineyard sits at around 500 meters above sea level in Meran/Freiberg, an area characterized by steep slopes, excellent sun exposure, and strong diurnal temperature shifts that preserve acidity and aromatic intensity. Here, Gewürztraminer thrives in mineral-rich Alpine soils, capturing both the ripeness of the sunny days and the freshness of cool nights. The grapes are harvested by hand to ensure careful selection of perfectly ripe bunches. After gentle pressing, the must undergoes fermentation, followed by an extended period of 5–6 months resting on the lees (sur lie), which builds texture, complexity, and a subtle, creamy mouthfeel. The wine is then given a further few months of bottle age before release, allowing its aromatic profile to knit together and its palate to harmonize.
Food & Serving
This 2022 Laimburg Alto Adige Gewürztraminer is a natural partner for fragrant and mildly spicy cuisines—think Thai or Vietnamese dishes with lemongrass, ginger, and chili, or Indian curries with coconut milk. It also pairs beautifully with rich pâtés, foie gras, aromatic soft cheeses (such as Munster or Taleggio), and dishes featuring smoked fish, crustaceans, or roasted white meats with subtly spiced sauces. Serve chilled but not ice-cold, ideally at 10–12°C (50–54°F), to allow the bouquet to fully express itself. A short decant of 15–20 minutes can help the aromas open up, especially if served in larger white wine or even light red wine glasses to emphasize complexity over sheer chill.
Producer
Laimburg is a distinctive presence in Alto Adige, operating not only as a quality-focused wine estate but also as a regional research center dedicated to advancing viticulture and oenology. Partly state-owned, the domaine draws fruit from around 20 hectares of vineyards spread across various Alto Adige growing areas, at elevations ranging from 200 to 750 meters and encompassing roughly 15 different grape varieties. With an annual production of only about 90,000 bottles, Laimburg emphasizes precision, terroir expression, and age-worthy structure—wines with vibrant acidity and clarity that stand among the region’s finest. The estate has become an important benchmark for Alto Adige, showcasing how thoughtful vineyard work and meticulous cellar practices can translate the dramatic Alpine landscape into elegant, long-lived wines.
