Description
The 2022 Lagar Da Condesa Albariño Rías Baixas is the flagship white from this boutique estate under the Gil Family Estates umbrella, showcasing the pure, coastal expression of Albariño from Galicia’s famed Val do Salnés. Sourced from vines rooted primarily in granite-based soils with touches of chalk and clay, it delivers a striking balance of intensity, freshness, and minerality. This cuvée captures the historical essence of Albariño from Rías Baixas—a region long celebrated for producing some of Spain’s most refined and ageworthy white wines.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Lagar Da Condesa Albariño shows a bright straw-yellow hue with shimmering gold and green reflections, hinting at both ripeness and vibrancy. The nose opens with lifted aromas of crisp apple and juicy pear, layered with lemon zest, lime blossom, and a delicate touch of honey. Underneath lies a distinctly saline, stony character that evokes wet granite and ocean breeze.
On the palate, this wine is rich and broad from the first sip, packed with concentrated, ripe citrus—think Meyer lemon and mandarin—wrapped around a core of fleshy stone fruit. The texture is dense and almost creamy from time on the lees, yet the naturally high acidity keeps everything tense, precise, and mouthwatering. A fine mineral line runs through to a long, persistent finish that is both powerful and refreshing. While highly enjoyable now, its structure, acidity, and concentration suggest it can develop gracefully for several years in bottle, gaining more complexity and layering over 3–5 years and potentially beyond.
Production
Lagar Da Condesa is situated in the Valle do Salnés subregion of Rías Baixas, where vines are planted on predominantly granite-based soils with some chalk and clay—soils that naturally emphasize Albariño’s saline, mineral-driven profile. The Atlantic climate, with frequent rains and cooling breezes, allows for a long, slow ripening, preserving acidity and aromatic intensity. Grapes are harvested by hand into small 15 kg crates to ensure they arrive at the winery in perfect condition. After careful selection and destemming, the must is kept in brief contact with the skins at low temperatures to extract aroma and texture before a gentle pressing. Fermentation is split between 500–600 L French oak barrels and 1,600 L oval concrete tanks at controlled temperatures, allowing both subtle oak integration and textural refinement. The wine then remains on its lees (sur lie) for around four months, with periodic stirring, building depth, creaminess, and complexity without sacrificing freshness.
Food & Serving
This Albariño is a natural partner for the foods of the Atlantic coast: serve it with all kinds of fish, shellfish, and seafood—oysters, scallops, mussels, grilled prawns, or simply prepared white fish shine particularly well. It also pairs beautifully with white meats, vegetable dishes, risottos, and fresh salads, especially those featuring citrus, herbs, or light cream sauces. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 8–10°C (46–50°F). Decanting is not essential, but pouring it into a larger glass and giving it a few minutes in the glass will help the aromatics open up and reveal more of its honeyed, mineral complexity.
Producer
Lagar Da Condesa is part of Gil Family Estates, a respected Spanish wine group known for elevating native varieties and terroirs across Spain. The estate lies in Rías Baixas’ Valle do Salnés, an area steeped in Celtic lore, pilgrimage routes, and ancient stone landscapes, where Albariño has been cultivated for generations. Here, vines are rooted in sandy, decomposed granite soils that have been rendered porous by frequent rainfall, while southwest-facing exposures ensure ample sun to fully ripen the grapes. With the gentle murmur of the nearby Umia River and its waterfalls as a backdrop, the team at Lagar Da Condesa focuses on hand-harvesting at the precise moment of optimal ripeness to capture the pure varietal character of Albariño. Their wines have gained recognition for combining regional authenticity with a polished, modern precision, earning strong critical praise, including 91 points from Vinous for this 2022 vintage.
