Description

The 2022 La Pousse d'Or Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is a striking example of what Burgundy’s most revered terroirs can deliver in a generous vintage. Sourced from one of Morey-Saint-Denis’ legendary climats, this Pinot Noir marries depth and power with the estate’s hallmark finesse and precision. For collectors and Burgundy lovers, it offers a coveted window into a Grand Cru site that has long been synonymous with structure, longevity, and complexity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Clos de la Roche shows a deep, vibrant ruby core with a youthful, almost crystalline brightness at the rim—an early signal of both concentration and energy. The nose is layered and expressive, unfurling with black cherry, wild raspberry, and crushed blackberry, backed by notes of rose petal, peony, and a hint of violets. Subtle nuances of forest floor, graphite, and warm spice (clove, star anise, a touch of sandalwood) underscore its Grand Cru pedigree. On the palate, this wine is simultaneously powerful and refined. The attack is pure and focused, with ripe red and dark berry fruit wrapped around a firm but finely knit tannic spine. Mid-palate, you’ll find savory undertones—black tea, dried herbs, and a faint gamey note—balanced by a vibrant line of acidity that keeps the wine poised and lifted. The oak is judiciously integrated, adding polish and length without overshadowing the terroir. The finish is long, persistent, and mineral-driven, with a stony, almost saline edge that lingers. While approachable in its youth for those who enjoy primary fruit and exuberance, this 2022 Clos de la Roche clearly has the structure and concentration to reward careful cellaring for 10–20 years or more, gradually revealing more nuance and complexity over time.

Production
Clos de la Roche is one of Morey-Saint-Denis’ crown jewels, a Grand Cru vineyard marked by thin, stony soils over limestone and marl, excellent drainage, and a slightly cooler mesoclimate that helps preserve freshness in the fruit. La Pousse d'Or is known for meticulous work in the vines: careful pruning, green harvesting where necessary, and largely manual work throughout the growing season to ensure optimal ripeness and balance. Harvest is carried out by hand, with strict sorting both in the vineyard and at the winery to retain only perfectly healthy Pinot Noir clusters. Vinification typically involves a gentle approach—partial whole-cluster fermentation in many vintages to enhance aromatic complexity and structure, followed by a cool, controlled maceration and fermentation using native or carefully selected yeasts. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels—often with a moderate proportion of new oak—to build texture and complexity, while regular but restrained cellar work (such as minimal racking and careful topping up) preserves purity, finesse, and a true expression of this Grand Cru terroir.

Food & Serving
This Grand Cru Burgundy is best showcased alongside refined, savory dishes that can stand up to its structure and depth without overwhelming its aromatic detail. Classic pairings include roast duck with cherries, pigeon or squab, veal with morel mushrooms, or a rack of lamb with herb crust. Game birds, braised beef with root vegetables, and earthy dishes featuring truffles or wild mushrooms also make superb companions. For cheese, consider aged Comté, Époisses, or a well-matured Tomme. Serve at 15–17°C (59–63°F) to highlight both fruit and complexity; if the wine is too warm, the alcohol and oak may dominate. Young bottles will benefit from a gentle decant of 45–60 minutes to open the bouquet and soften the structure, while well-aged examples should be decanted lightly, mainly to remove sediment and avoid overexposure to air.

Producer
La Pousse d'Or is one of Burgundy’s most respected domaines, with roots tracing back to the 19th century and a modern history closely tied to the renaissance of fine wine in the Côte d'Or. Based in Volnay, the estate has long been renowned for its holdings in some of the Côte de Beaune’s most prestigious Premier Crus, and in recent decades has expanded into distinguished terroirs of the Côte de Nuits, including Grand Crus like Clos de la Roche. The domaine is known for its unwavering focus on terroir transparency, precise viticulture, and an elegant, ageworthy style of Pinot Noir that has garnered a loyal following among collectors and sommeliers worldwide. Its wines are frequently cited in leading wine publications and feature prominently in serious Burgundy cellars, underscoring La Pousse d'Or’s significance as a benchmark producer in the region.
