Description
Jermann Vinnae Ribolla Gialla 2022 is a vibrant, ultra-refined white wine from one of Friuli’s most acclaimed producers. Crafted mainly from the native Ribolla Gialla grape, with a touch of Riesling and Friulano, it captures the signature brightness, texture, and minerality that have made Jermann a reference point for Italian whites. First created in 1983 to mark both a family birth and 100 years of Jermann vinegrowing in Villanova, Vinnae is now a modern classic of Collio.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Vinnae shows a bright, pale straw-yellow hue with glints of green that underline its freshness. The nose is delicately expressive yet precise, offering notes of white peach, green apple, lemon zest, and crunchy pear, wrapped in a fine veil of white flowers and fresh herbs. A subtle, stony minerality runs through the aromatics, reflecting the marl and sandy soils of Collio.
On the palate, the wine is dry, lively and finely structured, with a taut, mouthwatering acidity that keeps everything lifted and refreshing. Flavours of citrus, orchard fruit and a whisper of ripe grape skin are layered with gentle spice, almond and a saline, mineral edge. The Riesling component adds a crisp, linear backbone, while Friulano brings a touch of body and herbal nuance. The finish is clean, elegant and persistently savoury, making the wine exceptionally drinkable. Enjoy it in its youth for maximum vibrancy, though it has the structure to evolve gracefully over the next 3–5 years, gaining a bit more complexity and texture.
Production
Vinnae is sourced from estate vineyards in the rolling hills of Collio, in Friuli Venezia Giulia, close to the Slovenian border. Here, vines root in the region’s characteristic ‘ponca’ soils – alternating layers of marl and sandstone – which naturally limit yields and contribute to the wine’s minerality, finesse and tension. The grapes, primarily Ribolla Gialla with smaller portions of Riesling and Friulano, are harvested at optimal ripeness to preserve acidity and aromatic purity. In the cellar, Jermann employs a meticulous, modern approach: gentle pressing, temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel, and careful handling on fine lees to build texture without masking freshness. The result is a cuvée that balances traditional Friulian character with precision and clarity.
Food & Serving
This 2022 Vinnae is particularly versatile at the table. It shines as an aperitif with simple crostini, olives or mild cheeses, and pairs beautifully with creamy risotto – especially seafood or herb-based versions – as well as grilled or simply baked fish, shellfish, light poultry dishes and vegetable antipasti. Its crisp acidity and subtle savouriness also work well with sushi, ceviche and fresh goat cheese. Serve well-chilled, ideally around 8–10°C, to highlight its tension and aromatics. Decanting is not necessary, but pouring it into larger white wine glasses and letting it open for a few minutes in the glass will allow its floral and mineral nuances to fully emerge.
Producer
The Jermann estate, founded in 1881, is based in Villanova in the heart of Friuli’s Collio DOC, a region renowned for producing some of Italy’s most distinctive white wines. Now spanning five generations of vinegrowers, Jermann rose to international prominence under Silvio Jermann, who took over in 1975 and spearheaded a quiet revolution in Friulian white wine. By investing in the vineyards, carefully matching varieties to Collio’s sandy and marl-rich soils, and embracing a rigorous, quality-driven approach in the cellar, he helped put both Jermann and Friuli on the world map. Jermann’s wines are now fixtures on the lists of top restaurants around the globe, celebrated for their elegance, depth and mineral-driven precision. Vinnae, with its name and label honouring the family’s 100-year heritage in Villanova and their Austro-Hungarian roots, stands as a tribute to that history and to Friuli’s unique cultural crossroads of Italy, Slovenia and Austria.
