Description

The 2022 Jean-René Germanier Fusio Pinot Noir is a pure, single-varietal expression from carefully selected parcels in the heart of Valais, Switzerland. Crafted for fruit, finesse and balance, it showcases Pinot Noir’s elegance in a distinctly Alpine setting. This cuvée combines traditional barrel maturation with a modern, precise touch, continuing a winemaking legacy that dates back to 1896.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Fusio reveals a bright, medium ruby hue with a youthful, translucent core. The nose is complex and intense, offering lifted aromas of wild raspberry, blackcurrant, red cherry and cranberry, layered with floral hints and subtle spice. Notes of licorice, cracked black pepper and a touch of sweet oak add depth without overpowering the fruit. On the palate, the wine is silky and harmonious, with a velvety texture and finely woven tannins. Juicy red berry flavors—raspberry, blackcurrant and redcurrant—are framed by fresh, lively acidity that keeps the wine vibrant and precise. Spicy nuances of licorice, pepper and a gentle toastiness from the barrels carry through to a clean, persistent finish. Enjoyable now for its purity and charm, it has the structure to evolve gracefully over the next 4–6 years under good cellaring conditions.

Production
The grapes for Fusio come from select vineyards in central Valais, rooted in glacial moraine and alluvial soils that provide excellent drainage and mineral tension. The Alpine climate, with warm days and cool nights along the Rhône valley, allows Pinot Noir to ripen slowly while retaining freshness and aromatic intensity. Harvesting is carried out with a focus on optimal ripeness and fruit quality. After a long, cold maceration to draw out color and pure fruit expression, the wine is traditionally vinified, then partly matured in stainless steel and partly aged in 400-liter barrels for around six months. This careful balance between tank and oak preserves the wine’s bright fruit and elegance while adding subtle structure and complexity.

Food & Serving
Fusio is a versatile partner at the table, especially with refined yet delicately flavored dishes. It pairs beautifully with roast or grilled white meats such as chicken, turkey or veal, as well as with duck terrine, charcuterie and mushroom-based dishes. Its finesse and freshness also make it an excellent match for richer fish preparations—think seared tuna, salmon, or trout with herbs—as well as an elegant choice as an aperitif red. Serve at 14–16°C (slightly cool for a red) to highlight its vibrancy. A short decant of 20–30 minutes can help open up the aromatics, especially in its youth.

Producer
Domaine Jean-René Germanier is one of Switzerland’s historic estates, founded in 1896 when Jean-René Germanier harvested his first vintage in Balavaud, in the heart of Valais. Over three generations, the estate has grown into a benchmark for quality Swiss wine, now led by Jean-René Germanier and his cousin, winemaker Gilles Besse. Based in the Rhône valley of Valais, they have been pioneers of sustainable viticulture in the region for nearly two decades, helping to drive a renaissance in Swiss fine wine. Under the guidance of oenologists Richard Riand and Delphine, the domaine combines traditional techniques with meticulous barrel work to craft terroir-driven wines that consistently earn international acclaim, including more than 30 cuvées scoring over 90 points in Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.
