Description
2022 Hispano Suizas Bobos Finca Casa La Borracha is a pure, old-vine expression of Bobal from the high-altitude vineyards of Utiel-Requena in eastern Spain. Crafted from over 80-year-old, low-yielding vines on the historic Finca Casa La Borracha estate, it captures the depth, power and elegance that this native grape can deliver when treated with meticulous care. Named "Bobos"—a traditional synonym for Bobal—this cuvée is both a tribute to the variety and a benchmark for modern Spanish red wine.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Bobos shows an intense, deep ruby-red color with youthful violet highlights and subtle earthy tones at the rim. The nose is complex and refined, layering ripe dark berries and black cherries with hints of toast, sweet spices and fine wood, all framed by a balsamic, gently roasted backdrop.
On the palate, this is a full-bodied yet polished wine, with velvety, elegant tannins that are beautifully integrated with the concentrated fruit and the fine-grained oak. Juicy acidity brings freshness and lift, encouraging another sip and leading into a long, harmonious finish with echoes of dark fruit, cocoa, spice and a touch of Mediterranean herbs. While already approachable in its youth, the structure, fruit concentration and careful élevage suggest several years of positive development in bottle, rewarding careful cellaring over the next 5–8 years or more.
Production
The Bobal grapes for Bobos Finca Casa La Borracha come exclusively from Hispano Suizas’ own estate vineyards in Utiel-Requena, where old, low-yielding vines—over 80 years of age and planted at a density of just 1,600 plants per hectare—dig deep into poor, well-drained soils. All fruit is hand-harvested in small 15 kg crates in the very early hours of the morning to preserve freshness. On arrival at the winery, the grapes are chilled in cold rooms at –10°C for three days before a meticulous, crate-by-crate selection. After destemming, the berries are placed into new 400-liter American oak barrels with the heads removed, where a four-day cold maceration at 8°C is achieved using stainless steel cooling panels inside each barrel, with daily, manual punch-downs. Fermentation proceeds with a controlled maximum temperature of 26°C, followed by gentle pressing in a pneumatic press at no more than 0.5 bar. The wine then ages for a minimum of 10 months in new French Allier oak barrels and is bottled after only a very light filtration, which may leave a natural, harmless sediment.
Food & Serving
This richly textured Bobal is an excellent partner for roasted and grilled meats—think ribeye steak, lamb chops, slow-roasted pork or game—as well as mature, hard cheeses and aged Manchego. Its structure and spice also suit braised dishes, hearty stews and charcuterie boards. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight both fruit and complexity. Decanting 30–60 minutes before serving is recommended, especially in its youth, to allow the aromas to fully unfold and any natural sediment to settle.
