Description

The 2022 Günther Steinmetz Riesling Dhron Hofberger Spätlese is a beautifully expressive Mosel Riesling from one of the region’s most characterful estates. Sourced from the steep, slate-rich slopes of the Dhroner Hofberg vineyard, it combines crystalline purity with classic Spätlese charm and precision. This is a wine that captures the tension between sweetness and minerality that has made the Mosel famous for centuries.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Spätlese typically shows a pale lemon color with green reflections, hinting at both its youth and its vibrant acidity. The nose is pure and layered: ripe stone fruits like white peach and apricot mingle with green apple, Meyer lemon, and delicate notes of white flowers, along with the flinty, smoky minerality that is a hallmark of slate-grown Mosel Riesling. On the palate, it is medium-sweet but wonderfully balanced, with the residual sugar lifted by a fine, racy acidity. Expect juicy flavors of peach, mirabelle plum, lime zest, and citrus oil, underscored by salty, slate-driven minerality and a cool herbal lift. The finish is long, precise and mouthwatering rather than lush or heavy, making the sweetness feel elegant and refined. While already approachable in its youth, this 2022 Spätlese has excellent aging potential: over 10–20 years it should gain complexity, with honeyed, smoky and subtly petrol notes emerging while maintaining its core freshness.

Production
The Dhron Hofberger (often written Dhroner Hofberg) is a steep, terraced hillside vineyard in a side valley of the Mosel, characterized by weathered blue and gray slate that stores warmth by day and releases it at night, helping Riesling achieve perfect ripeness while preserving high acidity. Vines are typically worked by hand due to the extreme slope, with careful selection at harvest to retain only optimally ripe, healthy grapes at Spätlese ripeness levels. At Günther Steinmetz, winemaking is traditionally low-intervention: spontaneous fermentation with ambient yeasts, long lees contact, and élevage in stainless steel or large old Mosel fuders, all aimed at preserving the purity of the vineyard character rather than imposing heavy cellar influence.

Food & Serving
This Spätlese style is extremely versatile at the table. It pairs beautifully with spicy Asian cuisine (Thai, Vietnamese, or Szechuan), lightly spiced curries, and dishes featuring aromatic herbs and ginger, as well as with richer poultry like duck, roast chicken, or goose. It also works well alongside soft cheeses (especially creamy blue cheeses) and dishes with a touch of sweetness, such as glazed pork belly or teriyaki salmon. Serve well chilled, ideally around 8–10°C (46–50°F). Decanting is not essential, but gently opening the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving or using a small carafe can help the aromatics unfurl, especially in the first few years after release.

Producer
Weingut Günther Steinmetz is a family-run estate based in Brauneberg in the Mosel, known among Riesling enthusiasts for its traditional, terroir-driven wines from steep slate vineyards. Over the last decades, the estate has garnered a strong reputation for meticulous vineyard work, low yields, and an emphasis on old vines and historic sites such as Brauneberger Juffer, Piesporter and Dhroner Hofberg. Working largely by hand on challenging slopes, the winery follows a largely minimalist approach in the cellar—spontaneous fermentations, gentle handling, and long maturation—to let each site speak clearly. Today, Günther Steinmetz is considered one of the standout producers in the middle Mosel, regularly receiving critical praise for wines that combine depth, precision and aging potential.
