Description
The 2022 Guerrieri Galileo Colli Pesaresi Sangiovese Riserva is a refined expression of Sangiovese from the rolling hills of northern Marche, on Italy’s Adriatic coast. Crafted as a Riserva, it offers more depth, structure and complexity than a typical everyday red, while still retaining a vibrant, food-friendly character. Named “Galileo,” this cuvée reflects Guerrieri’s long-standing commitment to thoughtful, nature‑focused viticulture and precise cellar work in the Colli Pesaresi appellation.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Riserva shows a deep, bright ruby colour with garnet highlights at the rim, hinting at both youth and concentration. The nose opens with vivid aromas of ripe red cherry, wild strawberry and plum, layered with notes of violet, dried herbs, sweet spice and a subtle hint of tobacco and cedar from its time in wood.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with a lively core of red fruit, supported by fine-grained tannins and refreshing acidity that is typical of Sangiovese from this coastal zone. Flavours of cherry, red currant and pomegranate mingle with savoury notes of dried thyme, leather and a touch of cocoa, leading into a persistent, well-balanced finish. While already approachable in its youth, this 2022 Riserva has the structure to develop further complexity over the next 5–8 years, gaining more tertiary notes of spice and earth with careful cellaring.
Production
The Galileo Riserva comes from hillside vineyards in the Colli Pesaresi area of Marche, where calcareous-clay soils and cooling breezes from the Adriatic help Sangiovese ripen slowly while preserving freshness and aromatic lift. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure careful bunch selection, then gently destemmed and fermented in temperature-controlled tanks to extract colour, aroma and fine tannins without harshness. After fermentation, the wine is aged—traditionally in a combination of large oak casks and/or smaller barrels—for an extended period in keeping with Riserva regulations, allowing the fruit, tannin and oak spice to integrate harmoniously before bottling and further bottle ageing.
Food & Serving
This Sangiovese Riserva is a natural match for classic Italian cuisine and hearty, savoury dishes. Think ragù alla Bolognese, roasted lamb or pork, grilled sausages, mushroom risotto, aged pecorino, or oven-baked pasta and lasagne. It also works beautifully with roasted game birds and dishes featuring tomatoes, herbs and hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F); in its youth, a brief decant of about 30–45 minutes helps the wine open up, soften the tannins and reveal its full aromatic complexity.
Producer
Guerrieri is a family-run estate rooted in the countryside of Marche, where generations have cultivated vines, olive trees and grains on gently rolling hills overlooking the Adriatic Sea. Known for their sustainable, integrated approach to farming, they focus on expressing local varieties—Sangiovese in particular—with clarity and balance. Within the Colli Pesaresi area, Guerrieri has earned a reputation for producing wines that bridge authenticity and modern drinkability, with their Riserva bottlings like Galileo standing out for their depth, age‑worthiness and faithful representation of this under-the-radar corner of central Italy.
