Description
The 2022 Fontodi Chianti Classico is a polished, terroir-driven expression of Sangiovese from one of the most respected estates in Tuscany. Sourced from organically farmed vineyards in the famed Conca d’Oro of Panzano, it balances ripe fruit, freshness, and refined structure in a way that’s both authentic and impressively elegant. This is a benchmark Chianti Classico that showcases why Fontodi has long been a reference point for serious Tuscan red wine.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Fontodi Chianti Classico shows a vibrant, deep ruby color with youthful purple highlights along the rim. The nose opens with pure red cherry and wild strawberry, followed by notes of dried herbs, violet, blood orange, and subtle spice, with hints of tobacco and warm earth in the background.
On the palate, this wine is medium to full-bodied with a refined but firm Sangiovese tannic grip and a lively, mouthwatering acidity that keeps the ripe fruit in perfect balance. Flavors of sour cherry, plum, and red currant are layered with savory elements of dried thyme, leather, and a touch of cedar from its time in oak. The finish is long, precise, and mineral-driven, suggesting very good aging potential for a Classico: while highly enjoyable now with a short decant, it should develop additional complexity over the next 8–12 years.
Production
Fontodi’s Chianti Classico comes from estate vineyards in Panzano, in the heart of the Chianti Classico zone, particularly the renowned south-facing amphitheater known as the Conca d’Oro. The soils here are rich in galestro (friable schistous marl) and limestone, offering excellent drainage and promoting deep root systems that translate into concentration and minerality in the wine. The vineyards are farmed organically with great respect for biodiversity, and grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure careful selection. After gentle crushing and fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel or concrete tanks, with frequent punch-downs or pump-overs to extract color and fine tannins, the wine is aged in a combination of French oak barriques and larger casks. This élevage, generally around one year or more depending on the vintage, polishes the structure without masking the pure Sangiovese character.
Food & Serving
This Chianti Classico is extremely food-friendly and shines alongside classic Tuscan dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, pappardelle with wild boar ragù, grilled lamb chops, or roast pork with herbs. It also pairs beautifully with tomato-based pasta, aged Pecorino or Parmigiano-Reggiano, mushroom risottos, and cured meats like finocchiona and prosciutto. Serve at 16–18 °C (60–64 °F) to highlight its freshness and aromatic complexity. A 30–60 minute decant is recommended in its youth to soften the tannins and allow the aromatics to open fully.
Producer
Fontodi is one of the leading estates in Chianti Classico, located in Panzano and owned by the Manetti family, who have been associated with the region and its traditional terracotta production for generations. Since taking over the property in the late 1960s, the family has invested heavily in vineyard quality and cellar technology, gradually building a reputation for making some of Tuscany’s most consistently high-performing Sangiovese-based wines. Fontodi’s commitment to organic farming, low yields, and meticulous winemaking has helped elevate the standing of Panzano and the wider Chianti Classico area on the global stage. The estate is particularly celebrated for its Chianti Classico and the iconic Flaccianello della Pieve, and is regularly recognized by top critics and guides as a benchmark producer in the region.
