Description
The 2022 Finca Villacreces Pruno Magnum Limited Edition is a striking, large-format expression of one of Ribera del Duero’s most consistently over‑delivering reds. Sourced from organically farmed, certified parcels on the famed “Golden Mile,” this collector’s magnum arrives ahead of the standard bottling, presented in an artist‑designed tin that changes every vintage. With 92 points from Robert Parker and a track record of critical acclaim at prices that defy expectations, Pruno has become a modern benchmark for value in premium Spanish red wine.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Pruno Magnum shows a deep, vivid ruby to purple core, promising intensity and youth. The nose is generous yet refined, with layers of ripe black cherry, plum and blackberry, lifted by notes of violets, liquorice and subtle cedar, along with hints of spice, cocoa and a faint piney freshness that recalls the old trees surrounding the vineyards.
On the palate, this is a plush, fruit‑driven Ribera del Duero with structure and finesse. Dominant Tinta del País (Tempranillo) lays down a core of dark, juicy fruit, while the introduction of Merlot in 2022 adds a silky mid‑palate and extra suppleness, and Cabernet Sauvignon contributes backbone and length. Expect a mouth‑filling, concentrated wine with fine, chalk‑tinged tannins, vibrant yet balanced acidity and a long, flavorful finish marked by dark berries, sweet spice and a touch of graphite. Still youthful in magnum, it will benefit from a bit of air now and has the stuffing to develop gracefully over the next 8–12 years, gaining complexity and polish with time.
Production
Pruno is born on Finca Villacreces’ 60 hectares of vineyards, nestled within a 115‑hectare historic property that was once a monastery on Ribera del Duero’s revered “Golden Mile,” along the Duero River. The vines are divided into 15 distinct parcels, planted on predominantly sandy soils at high altitude, conditions that naturally limit yields and slow ripening, especially for Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, leading to concentrated fruit with bright acidity. This Limited Edition Magnum is crafted from organically grown grapes sourced from a specially certified plot chosen for its outstanding fruit quality. Vineyard work is meticulous: modern investments such as drip irrigation, higher trellising for improved canopy and photosynthesis, and careful parcel selection ensure optimal maturity before any grapes are picked. Harvest takes place only when the fruit reaches perfect ripeness, after which the wine undergoes fermentation and subsequent malolactic conversion in French oak barrels. Barrel aging is then tailored to the character of the vintage and the cuvée rather than following a rigid formula, resulting in a polished, expressive wine that balances oak influence with the purity of fruit.
Food & Serving
The 2022 Pruno Magnum Limited Edition is an ideal centerpiece for the table, pairing beautifully with grilled or roasted lamb, Iberian pork, hearty beef dishes, game birds, and slow‑cooked stews. It also works well with aged Manchego, hard sheep’s cheeses and richly spiced tapas. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both freshness and depth. Given its youth and concentration—especially in magnum format—decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the aromatics to open and the tannins to soften, particularly if enjoyed in its first few years after release.
Producer
Finca Villacreces is a historic estate and former monastery located on Ribera del Duero’s legendary “Golden Mile,” a stretch of terroir that hosts some of Spain’s most sought‑after wineries. The property encompasses 115 hectares, with 60 hectares under vine planted primarily to Tinta del País (Tempranillo), alongside Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. These vineyards once supplied part of the blend for Peter Sisseck’s acclaimed Flor de Pingus, underscoring the estate’s pedigree. Benefiting from sandy soils, high elevation and the moderating influence of ancient pine trees that create a unique microclimate, Finca Villacreces has invested heavily in vineyard improvement and precise, quality‑driven viticulture in recent years. The result is a collection of wines—led by Pruno—that regularly earn high international scores and a reputation for delivering remarkable quality relative to price, cementing Finca Villacreces as one of the key references in modern Ribera del Duero.
