Description
The 2022 Domaine Sylvain Morey Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Champs-Gains Blanc is a striking white Burgundy from a tiny 0.39-hectare parcel of old vines, planted around 60 years ago. This Premier Cru combines generous richness with a firm mineral backbone, capturing the essence of high-class Chassagne-Montrachet. Considered one of the most beautiful Chassagnes in the Morey range, it marries heritage, precision and modern elegance in the glass.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 1er Cru Chardonnay shows a luminous pale gold color with greenish reflections, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is refined yet expressive, opening with notes of fresh rosemary, resinous pine sap and subtle citrus—think lemon zest and grapefruit pith—layered with white flowers and a discreet touch of oak-spice.
On the palate, the wine is remarkably fresh and focused, with a creamy, enveloping texture that never feels heavy. Citrus and stone-fruit flavors intertwine with savory herbal nuances and a pronounced mineral streak, giving a feeling of chalky tension and lift. The mid-palate is complex and finely detailed, leading into a long, convincing finish where salinity, citrus peel and gentle toast echo for several beats. While already seductive in its youth, this 2022 has the structure and acidity to evolve beautifully over 8–12 years, gaining in depth, complexity and tertiary nuances with time in bottle.
Production
Champs-Gains is a prized Premier Cru site in Chassagne-Montrachet, sitting on well-drained, limestone-rich soils with a mix of clay that gives both power and finesse to the Chardonnay. The old vines—around 60 years of age—produce naturally low yields of concentrated, mineral-driven fruit. Harvest is carried out by hand to ensure careful selection of perfectly ripe, healthy grapes. In the cellar, Sylvain Morey works with a restrained, traditional Burgundian approach: gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, and élevage in French oak barrels (often with a judicious proportion of new wood) to bring texture and complexity without overwhelming the purity of the fruit. The result is a wine that transparently reflects its terroir—full-bodied yet finely etched, with a distinctive mineral core.
Food & Serving
This Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru pairs superbly with refined dishes such as butter-poached lobster, scallops in a light cream or beurre blanc, roasted turbot or sole, and delicate poultry like Bresse chicken with morels. It also works beautifully with rich shellfish, veal in a white wine sauce, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Beaufort. Serve at 10–12°C to showcase both its freshness and aromatic complexity. Young bottles will benefit from 30–45 minutes in a decanter to allow the nose to open and the texture to unfurl; older vintages can be poured more gently, with a shorter or no decant to preserve more delicate tertiary notes.
Producer
Domaine Sylvain Morey is rooted in over 400 years of winemaking history in Chassagne-Montrachet, a lineage that has helped shape the reputation of this iconic Burgundian village. Sylvain is the son of the respected grower Jean-Marc Morey and brother to Caroline Morey, who is married to Pierre-Yves Colin, placing him at the heart of one of Burgundy’s most esteemed wine families. After formal oenology studies in Beaune and Dijon and experience in both France and California, Sylvain spent nearly two decades crafting wine in the Luberon before returning to Burgundy. In 2014, when his father divided the family’s eight hectares, Sylvain founded Domaine Sylvain Morey with four hectares across Chassagne-Montrachet, Santenay and Saint-Aubin. Since then he has quickly attracted attention for wines—both red and white—that combine elegance, power and a striking mineral texture, clearly built for aging and firmly establishing his name as one to watch in modern Burgundy.
