Description
The 2022 Domaine Philippe Colin Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru is a benchmark white Burgundy from one of the most revered Chardonnay vineyards on earth. Sourced from the high, stony slopes of Chevalier-Montrachet, this wine marries power and precision, showcasing the crystalline elegance that has made the site legendary among collectors. The 2022 vintage delivers stunning intensity and purity, promising both immediate pleasure and remarkable aging potential.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru shows a pale to medium lemon-gold hue with youthful brilliance and a fine, almost shimmering viscosity. The nose is finely etched and complex: white flowers, lemon zest, and crushed oyster shell unfold over layers of ripe pear, white peach, and subtle notes of toasted hazelnut and fresh brioche. Hints of flint, chalk, and a delicate smoky edge speak clearly of its high-slope terroir.
On the palate, the wine is at once concentrated and weightless, with a precise, linear core of citrus and stone fruit framed by vibrant acidity and a deeply mineral backbone. Texturally, it is silky and tightly woven, with refined oak integration adding gentle spice, vanilla bean, and nutty nuances without overshadowing the fruit. The finish is extremely long, saline, and focused, suggesting that while already impressive in its youth, this 2022 Chevalier-Montrachet has the structure to evolve gracefully for 10–20 years or more in a proper cellar, developing richer honeyed, truffled complexity over time.
Production
Chevalier-Montrachet is perched on the upper reaches of the Montrachet hill, above Le Montrachet itself, where thin, chalky limestone soils and excellent drainage yield wines of remarkable finesse and minerality. The vines benefit from a sunny, well-exposed slope yet retain freshness thanks to elevation and cooling breezes, creating ideal conditions for top-tier Chardonnay. At Domaine Philippe Colin, the grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, allowing for meticulous sorting in the vineyard and at the cellar door. Fermentation takes place in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new, with regular lees contact to build texture and complexity while preserving the wine’s inherent tension and purity. Aging in barrel continues for many months, followed by a period of rest in tank or bottle to harmonize before release, resulting in a Grand Cru that balances depth, elegance, and terroir transparency.
Food & Serving
This Grand Cru white Burgundy shines alongside refined dishes that highlight its depth and minerality. Think butter-poached lobster, scallops in a light cream or beurre blanc sauce, turbot or sole meunière, roast chicken with morels, or veal in a delicate cream and mushroom preparation. It also pairs beautifully with aged Comté, Beaufort, or other nutty alpine cheeses. Serve at around 10–12°C (50–54°F), allowing the wine to warm slightly in the glass to reveal its full aromatic spectrum. Given its youth and concentration, opening it an hour in advance and, for the first several years, a gentle decanting can help the wine unfurl and show greater complexity.
Producer
Domaine Philippe Colin traces its modern history to 2004, when Philippe Colin established his own estate following the division of the respected Domaine Colin-Deléger in Chassagne-Montrachet. Building on generations of family know-how, Philippe quickly gained recognition for crafting incisive, terroir-driven Chardonnays from some of the Côte de Beaune’s finest sites. Today, the domaine is regarded as a serious reference in the southern Côte de Beaune, with an emphasis on precise vineyard work, careful yields, and sensitive use of oak to highlight, rather than mask, the nuances of each climat. Holdings in Grand Cru vineyards such as Chevalier-Montrachet solidify Philippe Colin’s standing among Burgundy enthusiasts seeking wines that combine clarity of place with impeccable craftsmanship.
