Description

The 2022 Domaine Marc Colin & Fils Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru Magnum is a commanding expression of one of Burgundy’s most revered white wine vineyards, presented in the rare and age-worthy 1.5L format. Crafted entirely from Chardonnay and hailing from the legendary slopes between Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet, this Grand Cru marries power, depth, and precision in a way only top-tier Côte de Beaune whites can. The magnum format enhances its aging trajectory, making it an exceptional choice for serious collectors and special occasions alike. Sourced from Bâtard-Montrachet’s prime limestone-clay soils, this wine showcases Marc Colin’s trademark balance of intensity and finesse, with meticulous craftsmanship from vineyard to bottle. While Bâtard-Montrachet has been celebrated since at least the Middle Ages for producing some of Burgundy’s most opulent whites, Domaine Marc Colin has, over recent decades, become one of the key benchmarks for transparent, terroir-driven expressions of this famed Grand Cru.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru from Marc Colin is pale to medium gold with youthful brightness and a subtle green edge, signaling its freshness and potential longevity. The nose is layered and complex, offering notes of ripe white peach, lemon curd, and pear, intertwined with floral tones of acacia and hawthorn. Underneath sit finely integrated hints of toasted hazelnut, fresh butter, and delicate brioche, supported by a cool mineral thread of crushed stone and wet chalk. On the palate, this is broad-shouldered yet impeccably composed: concentrated stone and citrus fruits unfold over a dense, saline core. The texture is both powerful and silky, with vibrant acidity providing lift to the wine’s natural richness. Subtle oak spice and a gentle creaminess frame the fruit without dominating, leading to a long, precise finish marked by citrus zest, almond, and a persistent mineral salinity. In magnum, this 2022 has excellent aging potential; while already alluring in its youth with a brief decant, it should continue to gain complexity and harmony over 10–20+ years in a proper cellar.

Production
Bâtard-Montrachet sits on the mid-slope between Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet, on well-drained, limestone-rich soils with varying layers of clay that give the wine both its power and its depth. Domaine Marc Colin practices careful vineyard management with a strong emphasis on respect for the terroir—low yields, attentive canopy management, and hand harvesting at optimal ripeness ensure that only pristine fruit reaches the winery. In the cellar, the grapes are gently pressed and the must is settled before being transferred to French oak barrels for fermentation, typically with a measured proportion of new oak to support, not overshadow, the Grand Cru’s character. The wine is then aged on fine lees, with judicious bâtonnage depending on the vintage, to build texture and complexity while preserving freshness and tension.

Food & Serving
This Grand Cru is an outstanding partner for rich, refined cuisine. Think butter-poached lobster, seared scallops with a beurre blanc, turbot or sole in cream sauces, and roasted poultry—especially Bresse chicken or capon with morel mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with aged Comté, Beaufort, or mild, nutty hard cheeses. Serve at about 10–12 °C (50–54 °F) to allow the layers of fruit, minerality, and oak to unfold gradually in the glass. Given its youth and concentration, decanting for 45–90 minutes is recommended, especially in the next 5–8 years, to help the wine open up and reveal its full aromatic complexity.
